Can I use Kinect for XBOX 360 for development on Windows 7

I have a Kinect for Xbox with a power/USB adapter.
When I plug it into Windows 7 SDK sample apps are reporting "Sensor not connected" and in the list of hardware I see only NUI Motor and Audio.
Is there some trick I need to apply to make Kinect for Xbox work on Windows 7 and develop for it,
or do I need to consider buying a separate sensor.
I have usb cord and adapter plugged in.

I am using SDK 1.5.
I got this to work on physical Windows 7, but I am still having problems with Windows 7 running in Parallels.
Virtual environment may be a confounder with USB binding ...
