Internet Explorer Toolbar (Menu Bar) disappeared after installing IE 7

Question

I use yahoo as my homepage, when the "Get IE7 now!" appeared in the toolbar, I clicked on it and installed it. Big Mistake so far...Here's the problem, after installing my IE menu bar (toolbar) containing "File, Edit, View, tools, help" vanished and I can't figure out how to retrieve it or get it back.  I have checked and it is not hidden behind another toolbar.

Along with that, The IE blue bar at the top & small bars at the bottom contain no information of the URL (webpage) when pages are loaded.

In the Yahoo toolbar, under the pencil icon- there is no standard toolbar listed anymore.  Also my tabs disappeared from yahoo and under the toolbar options there no longer is a check box to "Enable Tabbed Browsing."  I have uninstalled the yahoo toolbar and reinstalled it with no changes.

I tried a system restore also but it did not help and I can't do it again to take it back further before installing IE7.

I have also gone into the Registry Editor by following directions to remove the ITbarlayout value from webrowser & shellbrowser sub-keys to restore the IE menu bar. That did not work either.

Can someone help me get back my IE menu (toolbar)?  And possibly get back the tab function in yahoo.

I also went in to the add/remove programs to delete the IE7 but a popup comes up stating that if I delete, that other programs attached would not function properly or no longer work. 

How do I solve these problems?  Help  Jerry

Hi Jerry,

I am not currently using IE7, but I did use it for a while.  The menu bar (if I remember right) is permenantly hidden, but you can call it up on demand.  Simply press the [ALT] key and it should appear.  Failing that I'm not sure if you can get it to display permenantly.

 

As for removing, I have no idea how wasy that would be.  I used it on a test system and just re-installed the OS.

This has been a nightmare to figure out.  Tried the alt key....nothing.  Have also discovered now after trying to download another IE browser that the yellow information bar doesn't popup. I can hear it but I can't do anything.  I need the IE bar back and right now I'm just at a loss on what else to do.

The File > Edit > View... toolbar stays for me.

What I did was hit alt, then go to View > Toolbars and selected Menu.  Now it is permanent.

further problems arise..........I can't download anything now to try to correct the windows internet explorer.  When I've gone into the control panel to check the internet options, it will not open. How do you re-install the operating system?  Will I have to buy the program to do this?  Please Help....can someone explain to me how to get things back to functioning properely.

When you open the Internet Explorer, on the bottom line at the extreme right hand corner you will see "Tools" button. Click on this button. From the dropped down menu click on the "Menu Bar". This will restore the disappearing Menu Bar.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. After installing, I have no menu, no toolbars, no status bar, no address bar, and nowhere to right-click to restore them. The actual browser window works fine.

Oddly, the menus and toolbar do appear if I launch IE via a shortcut to a website.  But launching IE from the Start menu, QuickLaunch or typing iexplore.exe from a command window gives me a big screen full-o-nothin'.

When you can get to the menus and toolbars (whether it be in non-full screen mode, or by moving your mouse pointer up to the top and holding it there until the toolbar appears), try clicking on the word "Tools" in the top right corner and uncheck full screen.  You can also try F11 if you cannot get to your toolbars.   After hours of frustration, this worked great for me!

Just installed the final version today over 6 and have the exact same problem. Open a shortcut to site and get the menus. The regular start results in no menus at all. Any one figured this out?

After starting IE7 from a web link on the desktop. I opened Internet Options and made a couple changes to my HTML editor and the Advanced settings. Nothing there that should solve this in itself. After applying, then closing and reopening the IE desktop icon the menu bars are there. Must have been a config file of some sort missing in my local settings. I would guess that the links are opening under another profile.

Exactly what happened for me.  F11 took me to full screen mode.  Another F11 brought me back with a space where the toolbar should be, but no buttons - only black or a remnant of the screen where Windows failed to redraw what should be there.

It's definitely a profile issue.  I created a fresh account and logging in under that user account seems to have no menu or toolbar issues.  Now it's just a matter of comparing registry keys and/or files to see exactly where the problem lies.

The "Alt" key brings my toolbar back!  I wonder why in the #$%& they take away something that many of us use so often?  Maybe someone in customer support suggested it as a form of job security

Did you ever get a resolution for this.  I thought was to download netscape or firefox, uninstall ie7 and reinstall ie6.  BUT I CAN'T DOWNLOAD ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!

I take it back.  Not a profile issue.  The backup account I set up is exhibiting the same behavior.  It's intermittent for this new account and consistent with my original account.  I tried renaming every registry key I could find, but it did not help.

OK.  I uninstalled ie7 via add/remove programs in control panel.  I HAD IE OPEN AT THE TIME to netscape download page.  As ie7 was uninstalling, it asked for files (iexplore.exe and a couple others) I ran a search to find the files it was looking for and allowed it to make its changes.  When the remove process was finished (DON'T RESTART YET), I was able to download files so I downloaded netscape - shut everything down and restarted.  Then opened netscape when i restarted - went to microsoft updates and downloaded ie7 fresh - it worked fine!

I reinstalled with no resolution to the issue.

I spent two hours on the phone with a Microsoft support rep before the call got dropped.  I didn't have the energy to call back.  We did learn that the problem can be intermittent (the toolbar/menu/address bar appears < 5% of the time), IE works fine when booting in safe mode, and that disabling all startup apps and drivers via msconfig has no effect (though we wasted an hour before we discovered that the problem was intermittent regardless of what startup services were enabled).

I may try the avenue that it's a video driver conflict... some bit of GDI code failing in the toolbar drawing routine.  Some function that doesn't get called in safe mode where the XP window styles are not used in favor of Win 2000/98-looking windows.  A long shot, but I've had some odd conflicts with older (ATI Radeon 9800XT) drivers in the past.

Rashid, I've got the file-edit-view toolbar back up, but when I try to do and edit/copy of the URL on an open page, the word 'copy' is grayed out.  I can't find anything in the toolbar that offers a 'copy' option.  Any ideas?

I am so frustrated! I finally found File/Edit/View etc - don't ask me how coz I don't know! If they disappear again I'll have to start all over again.

When I installed ie7 it....deleted my desktop pic (my son! GRRRR!!), deleted my screensaver, added a search bar which I CANNOT remove, deleted all my icons (which are back now as I said but I don't know how), deleted my OE link so now I only have the choice to 'read mail' & nothing else, changed the font of all pages I visit, changed my home page & reconfigured the entire look of my screen! All without a keystroke from me!

I want to get rid of it but I dare not as it says I will lose attached programs but I don't know & can't seem to find out what they are!

Seems I'm stuck with it & I HATE IT!

OK.  The size of fonts on each web site is an easy fix.  Just click "View" from any website and go to "text size" - this easily changes font size.  For font types, etc you will have to go to tools.

You should be able to get rid of the "search bar" under control panel - add/remove (if it's google or yahoo).  Or you can just hide it by right clicking on the toolbars at the top of IE7 and "deselecting" whichever toolbar it is.

Tackle one problem at a time and BREATH!  :-)  MOST computer problems are a major pain in the *** but they are fixable.  :-)

As for your other tip, the search bar is 'Live Search' & I cannot delete it without choosing another default search browser first. In fact, I tried to do as you suggested & right click & the only thing that showed it could close was the little triangle at the very right side. Well, of course that closed the whole page didn't it!

Then I find another little perk of ie6 that I have lost...the history! Is it somewhere? I don't know!

I used to be able to click on history & see the pages I've visited...in order visited today....or visited most.... or visited on another day...IT'S ALL GONE! ARGH!

Every time I think it's not possible to get more annoying - it does!!!

We had it too on 2 of our 3 PCs --  We installed from Microsoft update even!  ( i am adamantly NOT a Yahoo fan, but this is not Yahoo's fault!)

With us, it was blocked from getting into the REgistry in the first place because of "Search & Destroy" software notifying us that it was trying to change our registry, more below . . .

 How did we keep this bad boy from corrupting our registry in the first place?  We have "SpyBot - Search & Destroy" (google for it, do NOT  fall for any product without the FULL name).

 Search & Destroy is FREE, yes, FREE and it works!  Some people (like Symantec/Norton) gripe about small errors, but it WORKS. 

It can block attempts to change your browser homepage, lock down your HOSTS file (that's in your registry), protect your Registry from changes via a "blacklist", warn you of any attempts to change your registry and PROMPT you if you want them or not, and blocks popups IE 7 allows!

 No matter WHAT Symantec says about it, "SEARCH & DESTROY" is a GREAT product - on three PC's in 3 different households it BEAT AdAware in finding spy/malware/tracking/popup programs!  It even finds a few Trojans!  We scan with it at LEAST once a week (it updates frequently) - did I mention it is FREE?   You can also manage your startup programs (we found an unknown Trojan that way!) and more.

 No I don't work for them either!

I have the same problem and followed the instructions on the registry edit above but the problem still exists. 

It's really frustrating having to double click on the Internet Explorer desktop icon 4 or 5 times before a window with the full menu bars opens and then having to close the previous four or five (pop up windows i.e. the type that adverts appear in).

Any other ideas most welcome.

       Ive Got the menu bar no problem,... but the little yellow information bar that used to pop-up concerning things like active X downloads has disappeared completley!!!! PLEASE HELP! I cant get on a lot of web ages - including tyically ironically - microsoft update!!!!

   Ive tried and failed to recover it by going to

      IE>tools>internet options>security>advanced

 and then check enable on all the active X controls. the information bar is still there meaning i cant download the correct active X control and get the update site to scan my pc etc.

I want to uninstall ie7 --I hate it and now cannot open tiff files on Library of Virginia --just for one example ---and I want to reinstall ie6. 

I am afraid to go to Control Panel and the Ann'Remove program because I might be left with nothing if ie6 doesn't come up as a choice.  Any advice will be appreciated.

I have recently had this issue with Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 as well with Windows XP Home SP2. The menu bar and as well the links bar was grayed out or not showing. When trying to initialize use of IE 7.0 for first time as " administrator on both machines, I could not do so. Did a search on google "IE7 menu bar grayed out" and came up with this solution. IT did work and I would trust help explained out from this source. Here is the link. I hope this works out for all you folks having this issue.  I checked extensively even with non adminstrators on same pc and server. It worked. I choose reg install as oppossed to fumbling with  msnualy updatingand changing registry. All I can assume is  users usingthe  server and workstaitons had installed yahoo and google toolbar and as well turned off view to  links. I would suggest   making toolbars aa auch no tvisible then  show links then do IE 7.0 update over IE 6.0. This worked on a third workstaiton. Guys! HELP! This exact thing has happened to me and I dunno what to do! I am not a computer geek and I don't have a clue where to start. I can't re-install IE7 because my updates don't work, and my active x don't work and that is why I had to uninstall IE 7 in the first place! HELP! I have done various system restores and stuff, looked in the registry and everything is fine there, I also looked in the system32 folder and everything is in place. The menu bar (tools, file, view etc.) doesn't appear and at the top there is no name next to the IE symbol (very top) and it is blank, what should I do?

"Menu Bar" is checked on my dropped down menu. the only reason i can function is an old window open has the toolbar, but in a new window it rolls off top of page and disappears. i know it disappeared after i had hit a bunch of keystrokes in another window - evidently the wrong ones for what i wanted to do 'on the page' - because i looked up from the keyboard and the screen was jumping around as though reponding to commands. since then it takes up hte 'full screeen' - even obliterating the bottom taskbar that i like to always see.

there has to be a command sequence to fix this. HELP! 

(btw it's a new laptop, never had ie6 on here, just ie7)

I love information that gets to the point without a million words to read. I don't really know how I found this answer, I guess it was just luck. Then it might be because my wife used to to use this computer and her spirit is still here. She knew a whole lot about computers. Whenever I had a question all I had to do was ask her. I am very persistent and I try not to ever give up. She passed away on 12-08-06. I sure do miss her.     When I went to work tonight I did something that erased the menu bar. By the time I got home I was really frustrated but I was determined to find out how to correct my mistake. First I looked in my computer book but I just couldn't find it. Then, all of a sudden I remembered that I could just type in a question on the computer and maybe I would get lucky. It only took me about 5 minutes. When I ended up on the Microsoft website I typed in a question and started scrolling through the answers. Your answer was perfect and short to the point. When I saw the answer I just reached over and pressed the ALT button and VOILA. It was like magic. I will probably will have a few questions in the future. This is a very helpful website. I've been having the same disappearing Menu Bar problem, & tried all of the above solutions to no avail - however I've just found elsewhere on the web another way of sorting it out, which has finally worked for me! The problem I had was that when you right click up by one of the tabs (so you get the Menu Bar - Links - Status Bar etc menu up) and try and uncheck Menu Bar, it wouldn't let me (so the Menu Bar was checked but still didn't display, and there was no way to change this). However, if you check/uncheck any of the other toolbars, then try and bring the Menu Bar back, it seems to magically reappear (finally!).

I have tried every option and suggestion given on this site and countless others. Nothing worked. After being up all night working on the problem and almost resigning myself to throwing my PC off of the balcony, I decided to remove IE7 entirely. It worked like a charm and I immediately got IE6 back. Lesson learned...If something works, don't try to upgrade.

I had this problem, not intermittent as some have described.  At least it appeared consistent every time that I looked.  I have Vista and IE7 V7.0.6000.16609 (both came preinstalled).

The File-Edit-View-Favorites-Tools-Help tool bar was missing and it annoyed me for awhile.

I was about to follow the process in: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555130/en-us but the article didn't specify Vista and the Registry entry was ITBar7Layout, so I was somewhat apprehensive about it being a fix.

I tried Tools drop down that appears to the extream right of the Tabs with dropdowns for Home, print, page, etc

I couldn't get the check mark next to Menu Bar to un-check.  I then tried "ToolBars" and unchecked "Status Bar" and "Google".  Then the "Menu Bar" would uncheck, and I could make the ToolBar with File-Edit-etc, appear and disappear at will.

Press the ALT key and the menu bar appears.  To KEEP it there, go to View, then Toolbars, check menu bar.  If it will not check uncheck Google, Yahoo or other tool bars THEN check Toolbars.  Finally be sure that Lock the Toolbars is also checked.  This worked for me and my menu bar is now back and STAYING back.

There have been a lot of solutions suggested and I am glad that I didn't go through the efforts of un-installing, editing registry, etc.  I had not installed anything so not sure what got it out of whack.  Pressing ALT didn't work nor could I uncheck Menu Bar under Tools. It always stayed checked.  I tried the one solution of simply Unchecking display of other items under Toolbars which for me was Status Bar and Norton and then the Menu bar displayed. I was able to re-check the other items and all seems fine.

If you can see the Tools icon (far bottom right in my case), go to pull down list (arrow down).

 

 

Toolbars > Lock the toolbars.

 

View the Lock the Toolbars option does not have a tick next to it.

 

If it is ticked, click it make the tick disappear.

 

You should then notice the traditional menu appear, although only part of it. A separator (vertical dots) should be visible. Hold mouse over to drag out to the left to expand the view of the menu (similar to excel). Keep dragging it until it is in the desired position.

 

All ALT key shortcuts will now start working to avoid excessive mouse usage.

 

This is well hidden and I hope they fix on future versions.

I can't find an issue relating to the missing history files.  I click on the yellow star in favorites center and a window opens showing favorites, rss, history with a drop down box.  I click the box and get *Search history.  I click that no response.  Any suggestions, please!!!! ??

Yes press F11, the windows title will disappear PRESS F11 once again, and will be able to see the windows title bar and the menu bar will appear. Select view > toolbars > check menu bar, address bar and link. Uncheck "Lock the toolbars" to re-arrange the visible menu bar, links, address.

IE7 has some new features I found that work perfect.

From RUN type "gpedit.msc", this will light up your Group Policy window.

 

Scroll down to " User Configuration", Administration Templates, Internet Explorer, read the information on the right panel.

7th item up from the bottom list should be " Turn on menu bar by default", double click,click the check box for Enable.

Your menu bar will be permanent.

IE7 is pretty good once you fix it up a bit. One of the other items was the "runonce screen that pops when you open IE7, you can get rid of that one in this list also. 

 

If you read all of the other options in the list you will find several other interesting items that will bring back the feel of IE6!

I have a similar problem to this. I had just installed IE8 only to find it is absolutely ***. I then did a system restore in Safe Mode (wouldnt do it in normal mode) to go back to IE7. Now, the title does not show in the taskbar or the blue thing on the top of the screen, the menu bar is gone (and no Alt does not bring it up), the favorities bar is gone as well as the links bar, nothing is shown in the status bar, I cannot magnify the screen using the magnifying glass in bottom right of window, I cannot right click on anything and for some strange reason double right clicking opens a new IE window, I cannot download anything and the yellow bar up the top will not show. Akso the tabbed browsing things don't show either... The only bars visable is the address bar and the Norton Phishing Protection bar.

Can Someone help me?... Please...

Installing Internet Explorer 8 BETA caused this same problem on my computer - Menu toolbar gone, can't use Ctrl+ function, can't download, can't access Internet Options, no right-click functions, etc.  The solution, which will take some time, is to go to this Microsoft page: http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?prid=12357, which is the Microsoft Help and Support page for Windows Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2, and call for support.  This FREE support is valid ONLY until December 31, 2008.  The Microsoft technician took control of my computer, uninstalled IE8 BETA and IE7 and had to do some file restoration before reinstalling IE7 to get me back to normal (pre-IE8 BETA installation).

The two problems I had were:

1. Could not see the Menu Bar
2. Could not uncheck the Menu Bar entry in the tools menu.

The only solution (after trying with registry keys, no add-ins etc.) that worked was suggested by J Hall

I do not know if this is same problem but it is killing my time. I can get the standard menu back, but not the toolbars I need and have used forever. The "Roboform" application which is my password and form filler is off to the right side. I have to click on the drop down menu to get the tool bar to show and be active. I can no longer keep it open permanently. Only toolbar besides the standard that remains open consistently is the "Links" wotj all the Yahoo entries. How can I get my tool bar back?

 I have gotten the Standard menu to stay with File-Edit,etc.  When I right click no longer do I see Google, RoboForm and other toolbars. I have to go to the right extreme drop down box to use Roboform and cannot get it to remain as permanent toolbar. This is problem since the application is my password and form filler. Can you help?

ive stumbled upon this forum when i was looking for a solution to the same problem  i viewed another webpage that told me this problem is usually do to a problem in the registry

i dont recomment messing around with your registry but this is very simple to do.

read carefully and do exactly as i say because it fixed my problem

click start menu/run and type regedit.exe this will open the registry editor

you will see a list of registry entries, the one you want is in..

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar

when you get there, you should see the "ITBarLayout" value in the right pane.  Right click it and delete it. close regedit and then restart internet explorer.  the menu bar (etc)  should come back

I have an alternative answer.

:: Symptoms ::

Alt doesnt fetch up the file menu either << (For all you lucky folk who found you could fix it this way, screw you.)

:: Things you may have tried ::

Pressing Alt to launch the file menu.
System Restore
Resetting IE from internet properties.

:: Reason ::
For my client who i fixed this for, the problem was that they had uninstalled IE8 and that had screwed it.
IE7 is now corrupt.

:: Solution ::
You will need to uninstall IE7 and re-install. However, some of you may find that the "Change or Remove" option is missing in Add remove programs, you can read my fix, or you can read the official Microsoft way to remove.

1. Start, Run
2. Type "Appwiz.cpl" without the quotes
3. Select either Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 or Windows Internet explorer 7 (Cause i cant remember)

1. Start, Run
2. Copy and paste the following : %windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe
3. Click next, next, next and ignore the warnings regarding programs which may not work, its listing things installed AFTER IE7, not stuff that use it.
4. Reboot


5. Now install Internet explorer 7, NOT 8!

P.S. Personal note.

If ANY of you are using Google or Yahoo toolbar, you are asking for this kind of thing to happen.

Fulou, Your solution seems to be the best I've seen but my question is, Once my IE7 has been completely removed, how do I access any websites to reinstall the IE7? I made the mistake of installing IE8 and uninstalling it after noticing several problems with it. Now I'm experiencing all the problems others are reporting (i.e., no ability to download, no toolbar, no access to internet explorer options, etc). I've also tried most of the other solutions offered. I anxiously your or any other assistance regarding this issue.

All I did, was go to a grey area on the toolbar and right click. The option for Menu Bar was right there. I clicked it and have had it ever since. Not sure why this option is not visible to you. >>>?????

The Fulou process is the answer with a bit of change for xp pro:
after apwiz brings up the uninstall window, you can't just uninstall IE7. You can highlight it, then on the left click remove Windows components, it will open with a bunch of things clicked. All are related to IE, so say yes-- when you reinstall everything related to IE is reinstalled. After that wait for the message saying the wizard worked.

Then restart. Ignor any suggestions to install updates then restart. Just restart.

Then go to your Windows folder and scan down for the ie7 folder. On my system spuninst.exe was inside a spuninst directory inside ie7, so Fulou's instructions didn't work because I told the machine to look in the wrong place. When you find suninst.exe, you can just double click, you don't have to do the command line thing.

One of your solutions was the ONLY one that acutally worked!  Hallelujah!  But just wanted to give some notes about it all (my situation that I posted which was under "Internet Explorer Toolbar (menu bar) disappeared after installing IE 7" forum):

1)  I found out that there were "hidden" scraps of IE 8 on my computer system files (which I never actually downloaded?) to solve my other IE 7 problem.  I deleted any and all files that had or were related to IE 8 in my system files.  I restarted my computer.  Then, I went ahead with your second solution noted above.  The first idea will NOT work if anyone does NOT have the option to "remove" it on their "add or remove program" menu (which me and many others do not.)  Those of us who do NOT have that, MUST try your second option.  It worked for me, and all is back to normal (my IE 6) is up and running and no issues at all.  I have it all back again!  Thank YOU,  THANK YOU.....be blessed!

2)  Your second option with  the start-run- and spuninst.exe procedure worked great.   But everyone be careful, and make sure to put it in exactly as it has been instruced in the thread posting.  It worked for me, and it was the only thing (the last attempt I was making before I was going to "crash" my whole computer system and start over from scratch).  Thanks again.  Thanks to everyone who had different solutions.  Although none of the other ones worked this one did---the ONLY one possible!  Thanks again.

Not sure if you had solved this issue are not, but just in case it was not, see response above dated 5/19/09 Tuesday to Fulou from myself.  If you are able to find a way - - - anyway--to uninstall, remove, or delete IE 7 DO IT!!  No other solutions worked for me either, but with a few tips that I shared, that I found out along the way, in conjunction with Folou's SECOND solution, my system if working fine.  It is all back, and I am running on IE 6 - which I prefer anyway.

I hope that you had found your answers, I have been up almost all day and night for the past 1 1/2 days to try and solve my issues with this IE 7 / IE 8 product.  I will NEVER do this (upgrade/download IE to newer version) again, and if you don't have to -- Don't!  Take care.

NOTE:  If your computer has an "initial set-up" menu, you can go under that and set up a browser for AOL (I have high speed internet acess via comcast via my cable line and I can use this with ANY search provider/browswer I want to select) or any other search device you wish.  I needed to find my old icon for "internet connection sign-up" First.  I then went ahead with the process and got that one up and running to be able to download the other item.  However, once I deleted all the files etc.. from IE 8 AND IE 7, my PREVIOUS IE 6 that I had already been running before I selected to upgrade/download IE newer version; came right back up again!  However, if you did NOT have any other previous IE versio running before that, it would not be the case for you then.  Hope this helps somehow.

i installed ie8 update and same thing - everythin disappeared.  I ended up uninstalling the program in control panel "add and/or remove programs" and everything went back to normal.  yeah.

If you want to permanently display the IE7 menu bar (File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools, Help), go to "TOOLS" on the upper right side of your IE7 and from the pull down menu make sure you check "Menu Bar" this will permanently show the above menu bar.

After installing IE8, I cannot see any of the toolbars although I am able to click the buttons -- blindly ofcourse. The background of all toolbar is corrupted and black bands are appearing as the background on all toolbars including IE8s native toolbars (menu, favorites, links, buttons etc).

I understand your frustration!
Everything has disappeared - your exit tab, view, file, tools, etc.. Even the start button is gone. Here"s what to do:

1. Put your cursor in the extreme upper right corner of the web page you are stuck on.

2. An exit sign [ X ] will suddenly appear even though there is no icon. Your cursor might have to be left clicked.

3. Exit out to your desktop page.

4. Click internet explorer and go back to any site.

5. Click ALT key.

6. You will see tools menu - click on appropriate tool bar ( probably " command " ) - or whatever toolbar you want back.

7. That should do it.

Hi Jerry,

I am not currently using IE7, but I did use it for a while.  The menu bar (if I remember right) is permenantly hidden, but you can call it up on demand.  Simply press the [ALT] key and it should appear.  Failing that I'm not sure if you can get it to display permenantly.

 

As for removing, I have no idea how wasy that would be.  I used it on a test system and just re-installed the OS.

When you can get to the menus and toolbars (whether it be in non-full screen mode, or by moving your mouse pointer up to the top and holding it there until the toolbar appears), try clicking on the word "Tools" in the top right corner and uncheck full screen.  You can also try F11 if you cannot get to your toolbars.   After hours of frustration, this worked great for me!

I'm not completely happy with this new toolbar. I've added buttons for dictionary and reference, but they keep disappearing. they aren't on the invisible extended list either.
