How can I stop download of individual file?

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this but here goes ...

I have a web site that I am going to add user security to (using an SQL database to hold validated user information). While I can easily control access to the site with this I need to know how to stop access to an individual file (e.g. http://www.mysite.com/downloads/my.pdf).

Can anyone help?
