Developer Tools Error

Just installed IE 8, on Vista.
If I start using the Developer Tools, the IE main screen can get messed up. Usually, this is lots of extra blue lines across the screen. Nothing to do with View Outlines and all that, as the lines come and go when I scroll up and down.
At first when I tried Cache View Cookie Information, it worked, ie showed the cookies of all domains in an ugly font. Now I try again and I get the following:
---------------------------
Developer Tools Error
---------------------------
Could not get the cookie information.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
What are the conditions which cookies cannot be viewed?
Thanks.

Wednesday, August 05, 2009 5:52 PMI am also getting the "Could not get the cookie information" error in IE8 on WinXP SP2. The cookie information page was working in a virtual Vista Business machine. However, it wouldn't show an ASP .Net Session ID cookie for some reason. I wrote about this here:

I am also having this problem with IE8 on Windows 7, but here is a hint.
The problem only started after installing some Windows Update hotfix. If I restore whole system back to just before I did this the problem goes away.
But now I need to find which one of these hotfixes broke this.

Hi,
Have any of you tried running IE8 in no Addons mode.... the very first recommended step in troubleshooting IE issues?
You can still use the Developer tool for IE8 with all other Addons disabled... it was designed just for that purpose.
If you do not want to disable all of your addons, just disable your Toolbars and Browser Helpers from the Advanced tab of IE Options - uncheck "Enable thrid-party browser extensions" (close ALL open IE windows, restart IE)
Some older, incompatible Toolbars and their satellite BHO's read cookies from other sites.

4 posts reporting the same issue 10 months apart.... bound to be broke by a hotfix.... RQ=80
Start>Search> Reliability and Performance Monitor
Will list all software installs and hotfixes made on your machine. You can filter it by date to narrow down what other software you installed.
Perhaps you had a disabled Addon that by chance you have only re-enabled recently. (likely)

Hi Rob,
I followed the instructions listed above (disabling AddOns) on my week-old XP SP2 64 bit install, and I'm still seeing the same error - "Could not get the cookie information". In the mean time I'm relying on Google Chrome to verify cookie values, but I would love to be able to test on IE.

I saw the same error until I did "Tools/InternetOptions/General/BrowsingHistory/Delete/Cookies&TempFiles",
then DevTools showed cookies again.
