Just an update: I continue to have this problem.  I'm also getting a decent number of hits on my blog about this topic and the search terms I see in my stats lead me to believe that quite a few others are seeing this, too.

    Marc,
I'm getting a similar issue with IE 7 on Windows XP SP3. I think it started happening when I upgraded my AVG antivirus to the latest version (8.5) but it might have been after that .. not sure. I did try upgrading to IE 8 but found the problem no better so went back to IE7.

I've tried setting IE to have no home page. I can see then that when IE starts the existing cookies are all still there. However when I navigate to a site (e.g. google.co.uk) all the cookies in the c:\Documents & Settings\<user>\Cookies get deleted. Using FileMon (from Microsoft/Sysinternals) I can see that a process called svchost.exe tries to read a cookie and then the InternetExplorer.exe process deletes all the cookies. The svchost.exe process in question turns out to be the main windows process I think (I examined the contents of the process using Process Explorer also from Microsoft/Sysinternals)

So by the look of it IE is deleting the cookies rather than some other process and like you I can't find any setting that would suggest I could stop this through configuration. Also this started happening suddenly, not when I changed IE setings. Right now my theory is that AVG 8.5 has some IE plug in that checks the cookies and deletes them .. but at this point its just a theory and so far I have no proof or a solution to the problem..

Let me know if you make any progress on this one. What Anti Virus are you using? What do you see if you track *.txt files with Filemon?

    Cheers

    Graham:

This started happening to me exactly when I upgraded to IE8, I'm almost positive. I'm using McAfee for firwall/virus checking, and I'm also on Vista, so we have those differences.  It's not totally clear to me if the cookies are being deleted (sometimes the files are there in C:\Users\Marc Anderson\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies) or just ignored.

I believe this started happening because in IE8 MS classified cookie deletion under the heading of "delete history".  Try increasing the number of days history is kept (Tools|Internet Options|Settings under Browsing History).   Unfortunately, in IE8 there are so many related controls spread out under so many different headings, dialogs and menus that it's difficult to know what controls what.  I'm still exploring ....

I'm having the same problem with IE8 (on Vista and clean install of Windows 7 RC).    There appears to be a bug with IE8, in my opinion.

We're all still seeing it, but no fixes are around that I've heard of.

Report to a forum that covers IE itself such as http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/community/default.mspx to get wider attention. This forum 's focus is on IE's layout and scripting engine.

But that's a public newsgroup, as opposed to a forum where I was hoping someone from Microsoft might see the post.  Is there some more formal way to report something we think is a bug?

If you want someone from Microsoft listen to you, call Microsoft's support number. That's the formal support channel. Support fee will be waived if the case is determined a bug.

    Hi again

The problem has finally gone away. How did I do it... ?
Well, been reading for weeks around the net, to try and solve the problem, tried a lot, nothing helped...
then I found a page saying this problem might be because of some tracking-cookies, add-cookies or so, that
are malformed or even can make ie delete other cookies.
So I fired up f-secure online scanner http://www.f-secure.com/en_EMEA/security/security-lab/tools-and-services/online-scanner/index.html
and it found 20 or so 'hostile' cookies. I let f-secure delete them, and after this the problem is gone.
Now I have forced my AVG antivirus installation to scan for trackingcookies and autodelete them.

Donno if this is a real solution, but suddenly after months with this problem, its solved for me.

    Søren:

Thanks for the suggestion!  Unfortunately, in my case the f-secure scanner didn't find any issues, so I'm still in the same spot.

yeah, well, it does really not seem like a real solution... but fact is, the problem is gone. So weird !
maybe its something else that got rid of the problem...
    Houston, MS has a problem.

I *think* I may have found a solution, but I doubt it could be so easy.

Under the Tools menu, Internet Options, I selected "Privacy" and then *deselected* "Allow session cookies".  I can still do "sessions" (i.e. order from online stores, etc.), but after several reboots, I have not had a single instance of deleted cookies.

    Yet.

I hope this may be the solution... but again, it seems too simple!

    Good luck,

    Mike

Another bummer on my end, as it looks like the "Always allow session cookies" option is already deselected.  Just to be sure I'm looking at the same thing:
Tools / Internet Options / Privacy (tab) / Advanced (button).  My Privacy setting is Medium, which I think is the default.

    Thanks,
    M.
