Windows 7 on an external hard drive?

Hello eveyone! I really would like to try out the new windows 7 beta. I don't have a dedicated computer to test it on, and I surely don't want to wipe the main drive of my everyday computer. I do have an external hard drive, and I was able to install Linux on it successfully and dual boot to it. I was wondering, can I install windows 7 beta to the external hard drive and boot it up from there without touching my Windows XP installation? Please let me know if this is possible.

As far as I know you couldn't install the earlier versions of Windows OS on an external hard drive. It would basically be too easy to use the OS anywhere and it's not what Microsoft wants. I pretty much think that you are not able to install Windows 7 on external device.

i am currently running win 7 on an external E-Sata hd, i tried a USB but it did not work.

yes this is possable i have a usb external hard drive 160 gig i have windows 7 running on it its quite simple actually

all you have to do is download a program called VMware

install that and then (i am assuming you have the .iso of windows 7)

set up a virtual machine with vmware and select the iso of windows 7

then just install to ur external hard drive if you have any problems let me know i did it and it works ^-^

but it seems to be no one else knows how to do this..

My answer was based on the information I have on the older versions of Windows. I still wonder if it's possible to run Windows 7 on an external hard drive without virtualizing...

Also works using MS Virtual PC set up a virtual machine and using the Windows7 iso.

I have a question, whenever I try to install windows7 on my MS Virtual PC on an external hard drive, it doesn't work since MS Virtual PC doesn't support a USB connection.  How did you get yours to work or even point to the ISO file of Windows 7??
