Due to a bug in the Hadoop code shipped in the initial release, the utility used by Hadoop to evaluate file permissions will cease to work with an access violation (for more details see this Apache Jira).

This will cause all jobs to cease running on your HDInsight installation. You will see this error surface in various exceptions raised during job execution.  Data stored in HDFS remains accessible, but Map/Reduce jobs will fail.

We have made a code fix for this issue available in Apache (HADOOP-9110) and in current Hadoop on Azure clusters, and will have this fixed in an update of the developer 1-box download.

To patch a current installation, download the copy of winutils.exe located here and overwrite the copy that is located in C:\Hadoop\hadoop-1.1.0-SNAPSHOT\bin.

We will update this thread when a fixed 1-box developer preview becomes available.

We are truly sorry for the inconvenience, and thank you for your patience.
