Cannot connect to database master at SQL server error

    Question

  • Hi there...I am working on setting up a SharePoint farm. I have successfully installed Sharepoint 2010, but cannot get past the configuration wizard. When I try to step through the SharePoint Products Configuration Wizard, I am getting the error "Cannot connect to database master at SQL server at (servername\sharepoint), The database might not exist, or the current user does not have permission to connect to it".

Here is what I have done so far...I am logged in as the SharePoint admin on the box while going through this configuration. and on the configuration wizard, I am putting in the credentials for the dbowner ( i have even tried sysadmin). Also i have turned off the firewall, in case the SQL Server port was being blocked. With these, i still cannot get through the configuration. My machine is a Server 2008 R2 and the SQL instance is SQl Server 2008 R2. Just for the sake of trying, I have also tried to hit other SQL instances and still getting the same error.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get this resolved? Thanks
