Reporting Services label print to Smart Label Printer too small, unreadable

    Question

  • Using sql server 2012 / vs2010 sp1 - attempting to print labels on seiko smart label printer 440 - 1 1/8 x 3 1/2 through reporting services.  Print preview looks fine.  when label is printed using the slp440 the font gets unreabable small.  Have seen several other posts with same issue and no resolution.  slp440 print program works just fine printing a label.  labels are on a roll - almost gone at this point.  vs2010 dev client hangs if attempt to print from dev client.  must promote to server to test printing.  have tried many different combinations of sizeing report body, list, report properties - printed font remains very small.  Anyone has thoughts on issue, how to resolve?

    More info for you...

    regardless of what size i make the report properties, the print preview window displays what looks like an 11 x 8.5 document, not the label properties - then when printed to the actual label, it looks like its viewing the 3 1/2 x 1 1.8 label as full page and sizing the font accordingly, making the font really really really small.  when taking the same report and exporting to pdf, adobe can handle the label size and is able to view and print correctly.

  • Do you see this issue only with Label printing to your Seiko printer or to any non-default printer for that matter ? Reporting Services use Active X control called rsClientPrint responsible for printing the report after print preview. It is possible to see skewed font spacing and/or size if the screen resolution on Reporting Services is not set to 4:3 aspect ratio (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_resolution ). You have to interactively log into your Reporting Services box and ensure that resolution is in 4:3 aspect ratio.

  • resolution is set at 1024 x 768 or 4:3 already at the server.

    Print preview shows as if on 8 1/2 x 11 regardless of which printer is selected - would expect to see print preview of the label as a label or as the size the report has been established for. 

    export to pdf works fine, print preview from adobe shows the report as the size of the label, not as an 8 1/2 x 11 report.

    Although forcing to pdf is a workaround, causes much grief to have to program around the parameters of the report -  need to capture the parameter values in order to hardcode the url, would be much more efficient to be able to run the report with parameters and then Print the report.

    Is reporting services unable to print anything besides a full sheet of paper?

  • We don't have specific documentation around this but we have seen customers printing Labels using label printers successfully. Yours could be report or environment specific issue. We would suggested you to open a support ticket with Microsoft Support detailing your observed behavior and maybe sharing a re-producible scenario.

  • make report size in squre manner lik 4*4 or whatever 

    and then set the tablix size according to label size

    the reason is if it is printed then it is not confused between landscape or portrait as it is square and it will only deal with the tablix size
