Windows 8 Server Preview: Wireless not working

    Question

  • After installing Windows 8 Server Preview, the wireless network does not work.

It seams that the WLAN service is disabled, but I added the WLAN feature and the WLAN services is running fine.

  • Hi Guys

The workaround provided by MS is

    Edit the following registry entry.
    - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Wlansvc\DependOnService
    - Add the value "EapHost" to the end of the list and reboot.
    - Note: This will only work if the Wireless Profile is deployed by GPO.

  • Hi

This issue is only related to the server version. The wireless works fine in the desktop version

Please check if you have the updated drivers for your Wireless device. I would remove and then re-install the device

  • I am having the same issue... Server 2008 R2/Windows 7/Windows 8 Dev Preview all work fine on this exact same hardware. I enabled the wireless feature and the service is now running.

It is a Dell Studio XPS 1647 with a Broadcom Wireless adapter. Driver is installed.

  • Hi

The wireless works fine on the Windows 8 Preview Desktop version, but not on the Server version, even adding the Wireless Feature

  • Same situation here, with an ASUS G73sw & Atheros 9285 NIC.   Works fine with the client version of Windows Developer Preview, but not the server version, both running on the bare machine.

Perhaps related, if I create a Virtual Switch using the fancy new bridging support, the wireless loses it's connection every minute or two.   Removing the switch put it back to working flawlessly.   Mysterious - but then I'm a developer, not a network engineer.   I settled for ICS instead.

This may be symptom of EAP or TKIP failure. Try temporary a completely open connection with no security at all. If this stops losing connection, that's it.
