"Syntax error, command unrecognized" Error when sending email using the System.Net.Mail.MailMessage and System.Net.Mail.SMTPClient class

    Question

  • I am trying to Send Email using the System.Net.Mail.MailMessage and System.Net.Mail.SMTPClient class. It gives me the following error:

Syntax error, command unrecognized. The server response was: username@domain.com recipients flow control, try later at System.Net.Mail.RecipientCommand.CheckResponse(SmtpStatusCode statusCode, String response) at System.Net.Mail.SmtpTransport.SendMail(MailAddress sender, MailAddressCollection recipients, String deliveryNotify, SmtpFailedRecipientException& exception)

What can be the possible causes for this error.

    Thanks.

  • Resolved the issue.

I was trying to send email to around 2280 recipients. All these recipients were added to the BCC field. After a little bit of trial and error i found that it only allows max 1000 recipients in the BCC field.
