SQL Server Upgrade Advisor 2008 R2 error

    Question

  • I am running 64 bit upgrade advisor on a Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit machine with SQL Server 2005 64-bit.  When I get to the next screen after the sql server detection page it is supposed to return available databases but I get an error instead.  "Object reference not set to an instance of an object."  Pressing OK is my only option and it quits.  I am running this as the local Administrator and I run the application as administrator as well no change.  I don't know what to make of it and there is nothing in the event logs that helps.

  • Hello,

Could you try to download the latest version of SQL Server 2008 R2 Upgrade Advisor from the following link:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=12548

    Hope this helps.

  • That seems to be a link to Sql Server 2008 Service Pack 2.  I don't have an instance of Sql Server 2008 installed, just 2005.  I have downloaded the 2008 R2 upgrade advisor twice and reinstalled with the same error message.  I have been installing the upgrade advisor from the Sql Server 2008 R2 Feature Pack.  I select the SQL Server component and the server name and instance name on the next screen and hit next.

This is the error I am getting:

"This wizard will close because it has encountered the following error.  Object reference not set to an instance of an object."

I have also tried to install the 2008 upgrade advisor and gotten the same error.  I need to install 2008 R2 though so I still need to get the R2 upgrade advisor to work.

BUILTIN/Administrators are sysadmin so I am not sure what the problem is.  I was able to run it command line and it went through 45 items and all but 3 were the same error.

    Thank you for your help,

  • Hi,

According to your description, if you want to use the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Upgrade Advisor to plan for upgrades from SQL Server 2005. There are some prerequisites which need to be installed, such as .Net Framework 2.0 or a higher version and Windows Installer 4.5 or a higher version. Once you have successfully installed Upgrade Advisor, and you can use this tool to identify potential issues before upgrading your environment.

For more information about overview of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Upgrade Advisor, you can review the following article.
    http://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservertip/2184/overview-of-microsoft-sql-server-2008-upgrade-advisor/

If the error still exist, I recommend you post more information about error for analysis via checking the windows event error.

    Thanks,

  • The prerequisites are met on the system and here is the report I get when I run it from the command line wizard.  Dot Net 2.0 isn't visable in the installed programs dialog in control panel so I looked in the registry and found it there.  I also did a check on the command line about the version of windows installer.  I would think though that I would be unable to install it as I have already without that being correct.  I ran msiexec -? and found that it is 4.5xxx.
