Bing Maps Store App v2 for Windows 8 or only 8.1?

Answers

  • Yes, this works for me fine. I'm using Windows 8, not 8.1 and running standard software. The documentation on launching the map app said v2 in it long before the Bing Maps Windows 8.1 SDK was released (or a version number decided).

  • As I mentioned before there is no v2 of the Map app for Windows 8. I have version 1.6.1821.2624.

  • I believe this is referring to creating the collection using v2 of the bing.com/maps My Places functionality. These features work on both Windows 8 and 8.1

  • Thanks Ricky.
Just need to figure out how to get version 2+ of the Bing Maps app on to our workstations now then. :)

  • v2 has nothing to do with Bing Maps and Windows 8. It's the version number of the bing.com/maps site. The documentation for Windows 8 maps shouldn't have that v2 statement. It's there as they appear to have copied the documentation from the bing.com/maps URL documentation.

  • Apologies if I've not explained it clearly but it definitely relates to the version of the Maps app that comes with Windows 8.

I've tested targeting the protocol on two devices.

One with Windows 8, where the Maps app is version 1.2.0.136
The other Windows 8.1 Enterprise Preview, where the Maps app is version 2.0.1810.2025

On the newer version the collection and point parameters are supported, in the earlier they're not, but fortunately the centre point and zoom level do still work.

    bingmaps:?collection=point.51.508615_-0.080639_Hello%20World&lvl=16&cp=51.508615~-0.090639

  • Odd. I managed to get them to work in the 1.2.0.136 version.

  • Be interested to see if this works for you and anyone else then:

    bingmaps:?collection=point.51.508615_-0.080639_Hello%20World&lvl=16&cp=51.508615~-0.090639

EDIT: of course, I can't create a link here to the protocol, but please try pasting the uri in to your browser :(

  • Thanks.
I checked another machine this morning that's running Windows 8 Pro N which is running version 1.6.1821.2624 of the Maps app. Windows Update and the Store don't report a newer version available. :(

Any idea how you managed to get v2 on the Maps app installed on your Windows 8 device please?

EDIT: The protocol does work in the Maps app version 1.6.1821.2624   :)
    bingmaps protocol works in v.1.6.1821.2624

  • I can see I've made the wrong assumption that the documentation suggesting the features only work in version 2 as it is working in 1.6.1821.2624, but I came to that conclusion as collection and point didn't work in version 1.2.0.136 for me but did in version 2.0.1810.2025 on 8.1 Ent Preview.

My original question is somewhat irrelevant now, provided we can get 1.6.1821.2624 installed.

    v.2.0.1810.2025 on 8.1 Ent Preview
