We have a very good company that we are happy with but they are small and we need more in house development. I code a little bit but i do not understand commerce server that well. I was wondering if i hired a developer full time what languages should they know? Do they have to know commerce server and can they learn commerce server on the job if they know C# and .net really well. We have a website that does 10 million a year so we need someone who understands pipelines and all that ____ but i am confused about how to hire someone. Hope someone can help

"can they learn commerce server on the job if they know C# and .net really well"
Yes, this is what I did. It would be easier if they also had a good understanding of ASP.NET, otherwise that's a lot to learn.

    "need someone who understands pipelines"
The hardest part about pipelines is finding good documentation. I found old blogs more helpful than MSDN.

Deverlopers can easily learn commerce server on job and prerequisite is C# or VB.NET and little bit knowledge on SQL Server. I would recommend to ramp-up the team and do deep drive training on commerce server or give some time (2-3 weeks) to your developers to do some hands on commerce server before they start the work in the project.

If you have decided to hire any experience commerce server resorce then make sure he has strong knowledge in ecommerce functional and technial concepts and you can find few commerce server questions in my blog.

    Hi Jake,

I would consider looking for high quality C# developers, who understand application devleloper (MVC/MVP OO principals) rather than your average web developers. I would then strongly recommend getting either in-house training, or sending your devs on a course so they are not learning by mistakes but instead are on the same level when they start to develop.

If you need more help, try contacting the Arlene Hall at Microsoft (b-arhall (at) microsoft.com ) who is the Commerce Server partner manager. She will be able to recommend the best approach to gaining some ground in this niche area. She provided some valuable insight for us when we got started too..

If you need any other help, please feel free to get in-touch, I am more than happy to talk about our experiences going through similar issues.

    Many thanks,
    Lewis

    Jake,

I've been thinking about purchasing the videos myself.  After you've watched them, could you please let me know what you think -- are they worth the purchase?

    Regards,
    Mike
