I keep hearing so much about the social bookmarking program from http://www.bmdemon.pcti-system.com .. and I was wondering if anyone here has ever tried it? Everwhere I look on the internet I hear people praising this program as if it was gods gift to marketers...It's almost like a weird cult of personality, reminds me of obama mania before he got elected. I'm about to start working on driving traffic to my new blog and I'm thinking about giving the program a go because of all the great things I hear about it and it's supposed unmatched effectiveness.. Can anyone out there verify these claims from first hand experience or dispell them as hype ALSO from first hand experience?? Thanks

Social Bookmarks are not social. The name Social Bookmarks is another of many very confusing names that Microsoft creates and Microsoft needs to understand that. The thread Where are the social forums? was moved from here to the off-topic forum but it is relevant here. I understand that Microsoft wants to be confusing, but I think it is wrong to confuse people. People need a thread such as this to understand that the word "social" does not describe any MSDN forum. I truly believe that many people will not understand why the "Social Bookmarks" are not social.

If this explanation also gets moved to the off-topic forum then that will be proof that Microsoft does not intend to explain confusing things and instead intends to confuse.

hi all,

do you think social network is good for getting visitors??
I just try to create some account from social network (digg,twitter, facebook,delicious). But there is only facebook help me to get more visitors to my site.

My site is Funny Games and facebook is good because it show the thumbnail when I post the link to my site. I have over 1k5 friend in facebook
For twitter (I have over 1k followers http://twitter.com/babegamer) and the others, I have no reason why to you them for marketing my site because they just show the "boring" text link. how can it attract customers eyes??

Hello

It is very frustrating this mixture of feature between accounts. I mean that one could log on with it's Windows live account but some of the stuff is on live profile, other on, MSDN Forims account still others in social bookmarks account.

And above all points awarded cannot be seen anywhere.

It is also vary much frustrated asking "Contact Us" options to be flood with autoresponders with nonsense contents that shows only that no one has read the message at all.

I appreciate the idea of sharing knowledge. That's great.
but realization is bad if I must be polite.

Profile control panel has only name and nothing else.

Even Feedback and Suggestions is vague and it is hard to find the right place to post message

I hope there will be improvement action in sort period.

Integrating the Bookmark Widget into Outlook 2007

Ok, this is the sort of application (social bookmarking) and implementation that makes me change the way I consume RSS feeds. Up until now I haven't seen tremendous value in using Outlook 2007 to consume feeds but I would if there was a way to integrate the bookmarking widget easily. The habit I have myself into now is a convienient one:

Google Reader holds all of my RSS feeds currently so I scour them daily
I use the Share function which appears on each post to communicate them directly to the blog using a Google Widget to display objects I've shared

This is kind of poor-mans social bookmarking the way I see it, but it does have a very convienient since I'm not relying on the publisher to add the widget, I can share it myself and bookmark it myself all inline with reading the post. Not breaking continuity is the key usability goal here and is something I think the Microsoft Social Bookmarking product can take a few notes from.

So, I would totally switch over to using Outlook 2007 as my feed reader if there was a way to add the bookmarking widget relative to each post. Right now, each post has a "Share this Feed" option that allows you to email the post. Extending the context menu here to include the Social Bookmarking widget, or better yet, extending the form itself so that it shows up in the header/footer of the post would be even better.

I love the new forum format. Over the years, I have accumulated a lot of bookmarks at del.icio.us. The only way the bookmarks here would be useful for me to consolidate the bookmarks in one place either all in del.icio.us or all in msdn forums. Can I 'block' a user from "Social Engineering" social.*.microsoft.com?

I have found at times and just found another case of this said 'time' where I am now wanting to 'block' a user and in respect to this I would be happy to have a block on any thread created by 'this user' and could put up with the fact if 'that user' contributed to another thread created by a different user as 'now & then' this user may have something valid to say.

I know 'visually' if I see this users name I can ignore the thread and just 'move along' and it is not so much that 'the user' is posting posts that could be 'marked as abusive' it is just I would prefer to never see the 'said user' again.

It is all within the context of playing nice and I whole heartily agree to this principle anywhere on the internet (Forums, Blogs etc)

(.i.e. Don't feed the trolls)

In the case I am specifically referring to this user ignores detailed responses from the 'community' and posts 'their' own reply and thus marks 'their own' reply as the answer and 'this users' 'points' are flying up the charts and it just gets the hairs on the back of my neck up. :P

This type of behavior of semi 'social engineering' these sites for personal gain when in 2-3 months time 'these users' can say "I have 4 Stars on TechNet/MSDN/Expression forums and I am a Guru" is something that social.technet/msdn/expression.microsoft.com will need to look at in the very nuture as the nature may not be abusive, but abusing the system is abusive.

Import from Delicious Errors

I just imported all my bookmarks from Delicious and as you see in the screenshot "2255 Bookmarks were imported Successfully"

When you look at my bookmarks here on TechNet it stops at page 50 (10 per page ) and it appears a limit of 500 bookmarks?

Is this the current case or did the import fail?

Case-sensitive URLs broken

Some sites (eWeek being the example I just noticed) use case-sensitive URLs. The bookmarks are saved in all lower-case, breaking bookmarks to these sites.

For example, I just tried saving a bookmark to
http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Windows/Microsofts-Distributed-Destination-Oslo/ (works)
and it changed it to
http://www.eweek.com/c/a/windows/microsofts-distributed-destination-oslo/ (goes to eWeek's 404 page)

Formatting issues for re-use

Being able to export and/or copy/paste a tagged set of bookmarks is extremely valuable. For example, today I quickly created a list of marks for virtualization, which I posted in the welcome thread of the Hyper-V forum to help newbies find the resources they need. However, copy/paste brings over some non-functioning tags ("save to my bookmark" and the "tags" list) that I had to hand-edit out, along with the time-stamp and "saved by N people" text.
Can we just get a clean export of only:
1) Link Title (hyper-linked)
2) Description text
3) link

Hi, wanted to share the contents of John Martin's blog post from this morning with you as a heads up of what you can expect in early September from the v1 release of the Social Bookmarks application.

Microsoft is opening up the MSDN, TechNet, and Expression sites to the community, so that technical professionals can better connect with each other, share knowledge, and succeed. Tagging - and especially social bookmarking - are essential ingredients for making this happen.

Back in May, just before TechEd North America, we released a preview version of our new social bookmarking app for MSDN, for TechNet, and for Expression. Since then, thousands of technical professionals from around the world have begun using it to save their web favorites online, share them with others, see what other technical pros are favoriting, and connect with others.

We also got a lot of great feedback on the app itself (thank you!) and I'm happy to say that in early September, we plan on releasing a full version of the app - v 1.0. Here are some new things to look for:

Subscribe to Tags or People: Find a tag you want to follow? Or a fellow bookmarker that bookmarks really good stuff? With the new app, it will be easy to get an RSS subscription for that tag or person (as in, click the orange button).
Browse & Find Users: Search or browse to find people by their display name (e.g., mine is "johmar") and other criteria.
Import Tools: Recognizing that a lot of people already have favorites saved in their browsers or in other social bookmarking sites, the new app will provide a tool for importing your favorites from Microsoft Internet Explorer and from Delicious.
Bookmarking Widget: If you have your own blog or other website, our new bookmarking widget will make it easy for people to bookmark your pages directly to their social bookmarks on MSDN, TechNet, or Expression. You'll get traffic from Microsoft when your bookmarked page is published in "social feeds" on our global sites.

Availability in 12 Languages: With the September release, the social bookmarking application will be available in Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Czech, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.

It would be more helpful in using tags, if they were sorted alphabetically. I can see where they will get out of control in a hurry. I would also like to be able to sort my bookmarks alphabetically as well.

I like the new social bookmarking preview - but it does need some work! :-)

My first question: how can I share my bookmarks with other users? In delicious, you can see my "posts" at http://del.icio.us/tfl. And if I want to just point someone to a tage, I can do: http://del.icio.us/tfl/<tag>. I can't see any easy way to do this in the social bookmarks main UI. It may be there, but it's not very discoverable!

It doesn't display correctly in IE if there's not enough 'space' in the white area. It doesn't happen in Firefox though. Also note the omnipresent IE page error (line 509 char 3 - 'object doesn't support this property or method').

I've consolidated forums for software development in my Favorites Forum folder. Duh. But the use of the Microsof favicon is not being used consistently. I happen to be the type of person that can "see" this type of navigation aid in a list which helps me improve the usability of my resources.

Let's get the Microsoft favicon implemented for all of the new MSDN developer resources and then while we're at it let's do the same thing for the "new and improved" TechNet. eh?

I skimmed through Taylor's Un-official documentation about Social Platform feed services which was a particularly interesting read. Some editing would be perhaps welcomed in the "Parameters" table

brands (optional)	msdn	only bookmarks saved within the msdn brand
	technet	only bookmarks saved within the ~~msdn brand~~ -> technet brand
	expression	only bookmarks saved within the ~~msdn brand~~ -> expression brand

Anyways the "brands" parameter doesn't affect the query. I can make up an ad lib value and the result is the same. As mentioned in the TechEd interview, I suppose this is planned to be fixed.

Also, is there a brand content categorizing planned for Forums? The brand change in the URL just switches the chrome graphics. E.g. http://forums.expression.microsoft.com/en-US/bookmarks/threads/ is the same content as http://forums.msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/bookmarks/threads/ which is the same as http://forums.technet.microsoft.com/en-US/bookmarks/threads/ (the same behavior as the current feed branding) .

Save to My Bookmarks Doesn't Add Title or Tags

Clicking the browser toolbar's Bookmark on MSDN button adds the URL, title, and tags from the post (e.g. from Blogger, try the OakLeaf System blog as an example).

Clicking Save to My Bookmark only adds the URL.

This needs fixing.

When I select popular by "Last 7 days" I get the first entry saved by 21 people:

Ability to search bookmarks for a URL

Is it possible, and if not consider this a feature request, to search all of the social bookmarks for a URL and not just a tag? Even filtering by tag there can be hundreds of links. Before I add a new bookmark I would like to determine if that URL is already a bookmark and add the existing one instead. This would help to prevent a flood of bookmarks to the same URL with slightly different names. As is, manually searching through all of the bookmarks is not practical.

Oh in addition it would be nice if when you chose to add a bookmark to your collection if the name carried forward.

Is it possible to navigate to a user's profile when you're looking at their bookmarks? I can't find a way to view a user's profile from their bookmarks page.
