Where can I buy RFID for development/testing purpose?
-
Wednesday, March 18, 2009 4:38 PMKind of silly, basic question in a forum with these many posts!I think, I need to have a RFID device to start development and test an RFID solution.Could someone guide me where can I buy one which connects to my laptop and start monitoring the events and track them.can i use my company access card as RFID device? if so, how do i connect it? I guess we need to have an RFID reader instead of RFID tag!to frame my question in one line..."where do I start, if i want to develop an RFID solution?" for the variety of cases mentioned in the documentation (events, asset tracking, monitoring etc)Thanks,Suresh

Hi Suresh,
You always start from requirements (what do you want to do?)
Then you make your research about possibilities and finally make your choice for implementation.
For example, if you'd need to implement a supply chain RFID project, I'd suggest a Developer's Kit from a manufacturer that would include all necessary parts: readers, tags, connectors, software, etc. (be prepared to spend several grands on it.)
Here is a link to an Alien page, where you can choose a proper contact for your location:
http://www.alientechnology.com/contact_us.php
Also, here is the Partners Portal page, where you can find all documentation, specs, manuals, software/firmware updates (including the Alien Device Provider for BizTalk RFID) as well as description and schedule for classes of Alien Academy. (Portal registration and marketing approval required):
http://partners.alientechnology.com/portal/partner/
Depending on standard and manufacturer of your "company access card" it may or may not be readable by an RFID reader.
Hope this helps,
Valentina

There is an RFID manufacturer called William Frick that also sells an RFID kit for dev/testing. It is quite popular.

Hi Suresh,
if you still playing RFID, you may be interested in VeryFields which offers the largest showcase of RFID tags with the most complete search tool. There you can find several tag manufacturers which provide development kits.
