You broke my Netflix and Viaplay!!! March 12. 2014

    Question

  • Both my Netflix and Viaplay, which have run smoothly in my Chrome browser under Mac OS Maverick now just reports that "Silverlight Plug-In has crashed"...

I have rebooted several times, tried reinstalling, tried deactivating/activating the plugin - nothing works!

I  think it's safe to say the newest update is broken. So...how do I fix it?

    Thanks,
    Freeflight

  • the recent security update for Silverlight, at least on Windows was to close a potential hole that could make a caller bypass ASLR security feature (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Address_space_layout_randomization). Probably the same issue was for the MacOS-X update

however I've seen in http://studio.clipflair.net some different behaviour with the previous Silverlight compared to the new one. In specific, I use SMF (Silverlight Media Framework) and some videos (that probably didn't contain alpha channel info) were showing up with a color tint if the SMF Player control didn't have a background brush (or had a transparent one) and the parent control of it had other than Black background color. Probably the new behaviour is the correct one (consider the tint a feature since the user can change the background color by flipping our Clip control over to see its settings ;-)

So maybe other issues were addressed too in that update

  • Hi,

First, the compatible Operating Systems and Browsers for Mac are Macintosh OS 10.5.7+ (intel-based) and Firefox3.6+ or Safari 4+.

    http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/get-started/install/default.aspx

If your system meet the minimal requirements and compatible browser, then please verify that you uninstall and reinstall Silverlight on your Mac follow the steps introuced in the following links:

    #Removing Silverlight plugins on Mac:
#Uninstalling previous versions of Silverlight on Mac

Then also please try to refer to the following article to fix the silverlight crash.

    #How to fix Silverlight Crashes:

    Best Regards,

  • I had the same problem after updating to the Silverlight Plugin.

Hopefully you have a Time Machine Backup, so that you can navigate to /Library/Internet-Plugins and copy this old Version (in my case: 5.1.2****) of the Silverlight.plugin to your Mac.

    Afterwards everything works fine again!

    Hope this was helpful.

  • Same issue here, last Silverlight security update is an instant crasher, older version was not

OS X 10.9.2 here (Apple has about 20 crash reports in a day for the bug in Silverlight, I sent them in)

  • I have the same problem. I tried to uninstall and install again with no success. The problem started to occur after the last update. My computer is with the latest version of Mac OS X and latest version of Safari / Chrome.

  • btw, I think that recent Chrome versions have issue with Silverlight regarding the RichTextBox and plain text boxes (couldn't type in it). But probably the apps you mention don't have text input controls

would be nice if MS fixed that bug too regarding Chrome

  • I got Silverlight to work again (I think)

Grab a fresh copy of the installer from

Security Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB2932677)

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42250

"Silverlight.dmg"  Is the file you want (for OS X), some reason the one hosted on the main Silverlight site is bad, Microsoft downlaod center one is good

  • Did not work, even after deleting all Silverlight files, points to a defect in Silverlight, this is teh 2nd time Microsoft has broken Silverlight on OS X

  • Grab the newer Silverlight version 5.1.30317.0

"Fixes an issue in the release of Microsoft Silverlight 5 for Macintosh (MS14-014) from March 11, 2014. It includes all security fixes in MS14-014 (KB 2932677) and supersedes MS14-014 on Macintosh OS X."

  • Does not answer the question, only explains parts of what happened.  A few days ago Microsoft realsed an updated version with a fix for the crash (they did break Silverlight in March), current on OS X is now 5.1.30317.0

strange forum bug with votes (and can't undo a vote nor, report that the Moderator is wrong)

  • Not even an answer to the question, just about the update not the question

Still broken, real embarrassment for Microsoft, this is one reason is fails compared to Flash Player (which can be used in more than 2 or 3 browsers)
