Can you share more details about where is it stuck (i.e. what is the text below the second status bar)?

The installation logs are located at your %temp% folder, look for a file called something like: Microsoft Visual Studio Async CTP 3.0_20111028_172929169-Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Professional - ENU-MSP0.txt (it depends which SKU of VS you have on your machine). The file should be big so you might want to paste the last few lines of it.
If you decide to terminate it, you should first try to reinstall it, but before that, let's see if/where this installation is stuck.

There is one file which is permantly growing
with this message always the same message... (s. below)
seems like an infinite loop....
File is named "HFI13A5.tmp.html" in %temp%
there is only one folder "Microsoft Visual Studio Async CTP 3.0_10.0.30319" in %temp% and that is empty

Wednesday, November 02, 2011 6:54 PMModeratorThis seems to be a known issue with VS patches. The advice I was given is to cancel the installation, reboot the machine and retry it.

I Already did. Multiple times. And its always the first action i execute after the machine has started. I also quit any open programs (like messenger)
but didn't help :-(

Wednesday, November 02, 2011 10:28 PMModeratorCan you make sure that VS is not pinned to the task bar (or any apps that pin VS)? our setup team says that this is the top cause for this particular error.

I removed VS from the taskbar, but didn't changed any thing :-(
then I also removed all normal shortcuts, also same problem...

I'm sorry to hear that it does not work for you. Since we have not run into this issue before and we do have repro to investigate the best mitigation would be to get to an eralier state and try it again from there. Here are a few options:
1) Uninstall all the Async patches from the machine (go to "view installed updates" and search for "async" to see the patches on your machine)
2) Find an earlier restore point for the OS and try it again from that point
3) Repair VS 2010 and SP1
Hopefully one of these will work.

I has these errors on a differnent msp in the service pack but the attrib -a *.lnk fix on the VS2010 shortcuts worked for me. see
https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/543254/silverlight-rc-will-not-install-due-to-error-messages-system-appusermodel-excludefromshowinnewinstall
Posting now as this was my top search result but does not mention this workaround.
