Hi Daniel 

Is your problem still open , actually your question can not be answered in simple way First of all let us know , Are you building a commercial application or just playing around ?

However what i will suggest is that first read out page 279-323 of  'Head First Object Oriented Design and Analysis" that explain a simile problem in very simple way 

then you can start for your project , Building a chess application is not a simple task and we need to dig a lot
