connecting to MySql DB with VB.net and without using the connector/net

I need to connect to MySql DB with VB.net and without using the connector/net. 
Is it possible ?

Paul, I have a problem with my ODBC connection. 

It shows me an error:ERROR [HY000] [MySQL][ODBC 3.51 Driver]Access denied for user 'xxxxxx'@'localhost' (using password: YES)
