SQL 2008 R2 setup.exe does nothing

    Question

  • I have a Windows 7 64 bit machine running SQL Server 2008 Enterprise.

I would like to upgrade it to SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. I loaded the media on the machine, but when i double click on the setup.exe, it displays a command box for a split second, goes away, and then nothing happens.

I tried rebooting the box, running as Administrator (by the way, I am part of local Admin group on this box), but nothing happens when I double click on setup.exe.

I have used this same media on other machines and it works fine.

Are there any logs that I can check to see what may be causing the issue?

    thanks
    scott

  • Hello,

The machine may have issues related  to WMI. Please run the following utility:

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=7684

Please note that Enterprise Edition is not supported on client operating system link Windows 7.

    Hope this helps.

  • I know it may not be supported, but I have it running on other Windows 7 machines and it is working fine.

I installed the WMI utility and rate the vbscript.  It said that it could not produce the echo commands, but that it will run in the background.  Does it log to a file somewhere?

48717 16:43:47 (0) **      Note: You can build a list of classes in relation with their WMI provider and MOF file with WMIDiag.
48718 16:43:47 (0) **            (This list can be built on a similar and working WMI Windows installation)
48719 16:43:47 (0) **            The following command line must be used:
    48720 16:43:47 (0) **            i.e. 'WMIDiag CorrelateClassAndProvider'
48721 16:43:47 (0) **      Note: When a WMI performance class is missing, you can manually resynchronize performance counters

48729 16:43:47 (0) **    - If the WriteInRepository command fails, while being an Administrator with ALL accesses to ALL namespaces
48730 16:43:47 (0) **      the WMI repository must be reconstructed.
48731 16:43:47 (0) **    Note: The WMI repository reconstruction requires to locate all MOF files needed to rebuild the repository,

  • Hello,

Please try the two commands described on step 4 of the following post:

  • Hi Scott,

From your description, I understand that the installation window quitted before finishing when upgrading SQL Server 2008 Enterprise to SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise.

This issue can occur due to Windows installer. Please try to install another software program on your Windows7 machine. If the same issue occurs (installation window quits before finishing installation), this issue is more likely a system issue and we need to post this question to Windows 7 forum.

Additionally, I advise to stop some relevant trilateral security software.
