Content Type availability in a different Site Collection

    Question

  • Hi

Will a Content type created in one site collection (root) show in another site collection?

If not, how do people get around this? should I simply duplicate?

    Thanks

  • By default it won't. Site Columns and Site Columns are site collection specific.

However if you do wish to share them accross Site Collections you can designate one of them as a Site Collection Hub. These hubs can publish the content types and any columns they use to subscriber Site Collections.

Wictor Willen has a good blog post on how to design/build your Content Type Hub: http://www.wictorwilen.se/Post/Plan-your-SharePoint-2010-Content-Type-Hub-carefully.aspx

Thats a great solution, is it something you have also implemented yourself?

  • Yes, i've used it quite a few times and it generally works well. It's a routine thing to have if you're using content types heavily.

In some cases (normally complicated ones) people deploy the content types by code, which has a few advantages but is much more complicated to do. I don't think that will be applicable for your situation.

  • Hi

I've set a content type hub in Metadata Service Application using the host address of SharePoint server (http://myServer01). However we normally access Sharepoint via http://sharepoint. This is in the AAM settings.

When I attempt to publish the CT I get a proxy error when using the url http://sharepoint

But it works fine when using url http://myServer01

Because the normal access is via http://sharepoint I was wondering if this may have any long term problems apart from me forgetting which url I ought to use!

    Thanks
