Site Collection Missing or got Deleted

    Question

  • Hi,

I am facing a strange issue, for some reason the top site collection gets deleted automatically (Or have to say not visible), but sub site is still active.

I checked the log files and do not have much information as well.

In the CA-> View site collection list -> the site details are no more seen, I cannot even delete the site either.

any idea why this would happen.

    Thanks

  • I would reset IIS on all servers in farm.

what you mean by subsite still activate? you can access site collection but no view in Central admin right?

check the ULS logs / event log for more information.

i would re-provision the Central ADmin site. for this please run below commands.

to unprovision Central Administration: psconfig.exe -cmd adminvs -unprovision

to provision Central Administration: psconfig.exe -cmd adminvs provision -port 2010 -windowsauthprovider onlyusentlm

after this you should update your AAM for Central admin if you are using it.

    if still issue then

at the end i would try to run the config wizard to repair the files.

  • When I say Sub-Site still active, that say I cannot access the site collection home page (root page), but when I give a direct link of the sub-site I am able to access the site.

I re-ran the config wizard and this did not help either.

there is no much information from the ULS logs too.

  • i had similar issue on our intranet. Home page of Intranet which is in the root site collection never loaded and after long time it gave a correlation ID. But all sub sites, and other site collections were accessible, when we enter exact URL.

with help of correlation id, after digging through ULS logs we found out that a recently published page had some custom code and it was taking entire home page down.

what is the error/behavior you get when you access home page of root site collection ?

what happens when you browse the web application from IIS ?

  • Hi Naveed & waqas,

Thanks for your reply, this did not help either.

As mentioned earlier, in the CA --> site collection list, when i click on the site collection it does not display its properties, like who is the site collection admin, DB and so on.

  • Do you have backups?  A restore procedure would be to recreate the site collection first in CA, then overwrite it with your content from backup.

  • I am curious to know what happens when you enter URL for your root site collection.

what is the HTTP error code? is this behavior same when you use complete URL http://site/...aspx ?

  • @Waqas, That did not help, cannot see the site properties in the CA -> view site list

@ Naveed, the pages says "the website cannot display the page.

@ DubaStep, Cannot restore the site "Cannot complete this action , please try again"

    any other options

    Tuesday, October 29, 2013 9:41 PM
  • in the URL where it says "page cannot be displayed..." try hitting "/_layouts/settings.aspx" remove "/pages/default.aspx" or "/SitePages/Home.aspx"..etc.....

if this takes you to Site Settings ( i doubt chances are less), then something on the home page of the root site collection is corrupt causing it not to display......

  • in your original question you mentioned that "sub sites" are all working fine.

May you please clarify whether, above error message HTTP 403, came when you hit "/_layouts/settings.aspx" page on the Root site collection....or sub site.......?

let's say you have web application http://intranet.abc.com ; then "http://intranet.abc.com/" is your root site collection....when you hit "http://intranet.abc.com/ you are getting "Page cannot be displayed..." and when you hit "http://intranet.abc.com/_layouts/settings.aspx" you are getting HTTP 403 error. Is this correct...?

In general HTTP 403 Forbidden is related to Permissions. May you please clear all cache, passwords and then try again and if login is prompted do enter "Site collection administrator" account credentials.....

again, what i am trying to find out is source of problem for your root site collection.....

  • Could you please run the below mentioned powershell and share the results.this will return all the site collection in a webappication.

    Get-SPWebApplication <http://WebApplicationURL> | Get-SPSiteAdministration -Limit ALL | Select URL

if you want to get the all sites in the database.

    $site = Get-SPSite <http://SiteName>

    $dbguid = $site.contentdatabase.id

Get-SPSite -ContentDatabase $dbguid | Format-Table –Property Url, Owner, SecondaryOwner, Quota

Also check the health analyzer and see if their is anything wrong.

How many site collections in that webapp? Try to check the site quota and lock option, if you can see you site collection there?

  • @Naveed,

I have tried to access the site from different system (servers) and the issue is the same. page cannot be displayed, for the home page and declined to show this page (Error 403) while accessing the settings page.

@Waqas,  when i wanted to list all the site collection in the webapplication using powershell, the comand displays all the site collection till it hits the one which has issue. it does not display the next site collection (shows empty) and then displays the rest.

    Example as below:

    http://intranet.com/abc

    http://intranet.com/def

    http://intranet.com/ghi

<http://intranet.com/jkl> does not populate this site in the powershell, leave empty space

  • do you know in which content DB this site is, if not too many sites, then i suggest to move all site collections from affected content db to new or any other esixitng one. offcourse there will be outage for the sites, you have to plan if this is production farm.

2nd thing I would go and will try detach and attach the content DB(which contains the offending site). again this will bring down all sites in the content until you attach the db back. i recommend peform this step atleast 2 or 3 times (detach and reattach ). wait for a min so before attaching the db and test everythime you attach it.

  • I have only one site on this Content DB, I have detached and attached once earlier, can do it once again.

how will this resolve the issue?

  • hope i am not repeating the same question, if so my apologies :)

    if you happen to have SQL Database backup of the content DB having "root site collection" in question, when it was working well, then you may try;

    • restore content DB to SQL server from back up
    • use Central Admin-->Back up restore-->Recover data from unattached content DB
    • export the site in question.....
    • using PowerShell Import it back .

  • whats the build version of the farm, is this problem(main) started after any upgrade?

Is this a publishing site? could you please check the Site quota or check the space on the DB server space and also see if content DB reach the maximum space?

check this KB article, the error MSFT mentioned is the same you are getting, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2552971/en-us?sd=rss&spid=14944
