Sane Viewing of this forum

    General discussion

  • I currently use google chrome as a viewer, so unless I say differently that will be my default.

I dont consider this off topic because the stated end product is a viewer that will be able to format THIS FORUM intelligently.

Ok the file extention is css and for chrome total filespec seems to be randomized but roughly follow this scheme:

    C:\Users\renee\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User       Data\Default\Extensions\ndibdjnfmopecpmkdieinmbadjfpblof\15.1.0.2_0\content\css

The ndibdjnfmopecpmkdieinmbadjfpblof is suspect of local randomization.

A guideline of this thread is that if you have a question - ask it.

  • O.K. but what is the question?

Oh it is a discussion thread but I read this "A guideline of this thread is that if you have a question - ask it" and thought you had a question. My bad.

  • Hi Renee,

It is fair to bring this info into light in this forum.  Could you please edit your original post and include the link to the originating forum thread?  I think there are more than one going that contain some of these ideas, so I'm not sure which one the link should go to.

To be honest I'm not following the threads closely or participating in the project because I feel like it is not our responsibility to give ourselves the view of the forums that we want.  Not when there is so little (I've seen none but there must be some somewhere) encouragement for the new format.  If in the end we are stuck with this as-is, then I'll probably concede and use the solution myself.

But in the meantime I won't discourage its use.

  • You can install  the Tamper Monkey extension in Chrome and then use javascript to alter the page when it renders.  I think you can override the css, among other things.  I don't know how much you can alter, though, since I'm not really very strong in web development.

Then Chris, this thread is for you. I'd like this thread to start at the beginning and end with a usuable .css file for these ms fora.

  • Here is a copy of what i have put together so far thanks to the help of Crazypennie`s hard work and great tips. This is a work in progress so there are some things i am still working on. It only includes what i wanted for myself so you can change things around to suit your preference by looking at this Link where Crazypennie has posted several other things you can do to change the look and feel of the forum. I tried to make it so when scrolling the questions and threads that my eyes where not overwhelmed with useless information and a bunch of  bla looking colors. It is not as nice as our old forum but, it makes things a little better. :)

    Here where I am at:

This is not complete ... Still have a bunch of thing to work out.

I took care of using code supported by:     IE - Firefox - Opera - Chrome - Safari

The Thread list start to have the "feel" of the old forum.

I havent start to work the forum header yet ... may be tonight

    Known bugs:

-- The left panel opens too large. ( Really not sure if this can be solve using CSS. The width is set from Java script into a tag format that I am not familiar with )

-- If you chose to look at "My Threads" and expand a thread, the post have inconsistant width. ( This appears to come from a different class name. It should be easy to fix )

-- Got some incompatibility issue when going to TechNet forum and Microsoft forum. ( Should not be a problem to fix. Will look at this when the MSDN forum code will be completed

    In this version:

-- Installed UI with the "Feel" of the old forum (90% done)

-- Modified the horizontal bounds so the forum resize with the browser and take the full with of the browser. No more gray empty area on each side. (Finally the forum takes the full width of the screen. I wonder why Microsoft never could get this to work ?? )

-- I moved the Vote area above the post body ... This allow larger post area. At this time the dam gray icon in the top-left corner dont show. I will have to put it back, since without it there is no way to know which post are mark as answer .. or proposed as answer. I am trying to move it on the side of the vote area. (Hopefully Microsoft will reinctall this info at the bottom of the thread like it use to be.)

If you find some bugs, ... Let me know

This is what it look like at this point:

    .

    .

Scroll down the thread for Code .............

great work. I hope i will see more of that !

Got a few errors in preview like: In the "Date for left icons" section:

     background- 0px;

    i replaced it with

     background-;

Also removed the semicolon between the set value and the override tag ( "!important" ).

Again, pretty good work ! Thanks !

Different browsers have different local css folders (I imagine - mine certainly does.)

For this reason I would recommend users install STYLISH which circumvents the need to specify here where the file needs to be installed for all the different bowsers.

Once stylish has been installed, then *open this forum in the browser* and then open the Stylish extension with the extension icon (I suppose that differs in placement for each browser also?)

Once open, there would be the text as setup when downloading/installing Stylish from the Stylish site. Replace all of that with the Crazypennie text from this site (or any other example text). and that should be it.

That should cover all eventualities I think.

  • From what I've seen, they are the same. Stop and think about it, they have to be or else HTML's would give different views on different viewers and they do not.

  • So, what we're supposed to do with that code to make it work in Chrome?

Can you specify the process step by step (e.g.)

    1. Copy this text into NewForumsLook.css file at this folder, etc.

    -----------

I've been looking at these threads but I don't know what I am supposed to do exactly, so I haven't tried it.

How to use the style sheets

I would first like to give those comments

-- I developped this style sheet with Chrome, using Stylish as style sheet installer. I was carefull to use code supported by   IE - Firefox - Opera - Chrome - Safari but I didn't test it on all browsers. From the comments I recieved, it works on all those browsers. The usage of Stylish or any other installer is not absolutly required, but it make the usage of the style sheet much easier. (Otherwise, you will need to install the sheet each time you navigate in the forum)

The code supports MSDN forums and TechNet forums. To use with the Microsoft forums, you will have to comment in the code the complete "Header" section. and save it as a separate style sheet.

There are still a few bug that I will fix or not later. ( 1-The Icon in the top-left corner of the post dont show. I am waiting to see if MS will correct the problem of showing the name of who proposed  as answer and which thread was mark as an answer first) (  2-I dont override the the Icons for the locked thread or discussions) ( 3- I have made the forum to resize with the browser, so the threads/post get as wide as the browser, however, there is a minimum width where it render correctly, When less then about 900 pixels wide the HTML elements gets all squized together and start to jump. I cannot realy do much about this since the HTML code was not done for a resizng behaviour.) ( -4 If you try to navigate using the BACK button of the browser, the server does change a few class name in the header, causing some elements to render with an un-overrided style. I will correct this in a futur version)

    ---------------------------------------------------------

    now, How to use this:

1), using the browser that you want to use to see the forum, navigate to

    http://userstyles.org/styles/89560/microsoft-forums-technet-msdn-answers

    1) Download and install the Stylish add-in

    2) with the browser, navigate to the MSDN forum site

    3) click the Stylish icon that appeared on the browser menu when you installed the add-in

    4) in the context menu, click "Find more style for this site"

    5) You will be given a choice of style sheet, install any one, .. Doesn't matter which one since you will change the code in it

    6) Once installed, navigate back to the forum and hit the Stylish icon again

    7) Now you will chose in the popup menu "Edit". The Edit page will open.

    8) replace the entire code in the code box with the code  I did.

    9) under the code box, You will see the controls to select the URLs where the code applies. make sure that those 2 sites are present:

                social.technet.microsoft.com

                social.msdn.microsoft.com

if not, click Add and add them.

if there are any other sites other than those 2, click remove to remove them.

    10) make sure that the Enabled check box is checked

    11) Click Save

    -------------------------------------

    .

If you are using my style sheet, please let me know.

You can do that by simply posting here in this thread.

The reason for that is that it require a significant amont of work to create those sheets ( got to read and understand the HTML code behind, and fight with it )

    So,

if almost nobody is using it, I will not get to the trouble to make updates for it

i am using parts of your stylesheet.

If you have got questions about this, just ask.

    In a perfect world,
users would never enter data in the wrong form,
files they choose to open would always exist
and code would never have bugs.

  • @ Crazzypennie,

I have made my own style but, i have used quite a few things out of yours to make mine what it is. I would like to say thanks again for your hard work at figuring it out and showing all of us how to do it.  :)

PS: I have updated my code that i posted above to include changing the smallgraytext color and have added the Answered Locked icon.

    .

    Okay,

You are not saying which style sheet you are talking about.

As I said, mine works on IE, Chrome, Opera, Firefox and Safari.

It supports  MSDN and TechNet forums.

And the version I posted last is the last one at least until Microsoft finish it's update to the forum bugs.

And it also can be the last one ever if not enough people are using it

    ---------------------------

As far as IronRazerz style sheet, I dont know if it is the final code or if the code is supported on all those browsers and if compatible with TechNet forum. He is the one who can answer it

I have only tried it on a Firefox browser so i couldn`t say if it will work on any others. As far as being done with it i have it the way i like it so the only other updates that i may make to it is to maybe add an unanswered locked icon. I don`t know if they use one or not because i have not seen one so if i run into one i will add it.  :)

  • I just switched to your stylesheet using the instructions you provided. I will see how do I like it and if something else will have to be adjusted.

    Thanks again.

    Insane ...

I cannot post the updated version

For those who tried to use the HTML button in the posts, they probably noticed that MS remove some of the HTML and CSS code you post, ... probably for security reason.

Now, they also remove it in the code block ...

So, we cannot post HTML code and CSS code in the code block without having some of the code removed...

    Thursday, July 04, 2013 12:02 PM
  • Hi CP

How about if you ignore the code block and just post as plain text.

What could be 'dangerous' about that? Or, is MS jealous that you are able to improve their offering?

Why being so sad this morning?

I'm not allowed to answer that because the NSA (Reed Kimble) says "Please do not pull a thread off-topic in such a way; it clutters the thread and is against the terms of use for the forums." and I don't want my license to post removed.

Although it really surprises me that the NSA hasn't deleted or moved this thread by now.

I Know this is off topic but, I have to ask what is up with this? I think the word "Expert" is a bunch of BS and i don`t think you should let that bother you because, you have helped and answered a lot of people here. I would like to see the old Scull picture back.  :)

    @ CrazyPennie,

That figures. How about putting it in a text file and putting it on your SkyDrive and posting a link ?

I posted this bug in the Issue forum

What happens if you copy your CSS code first to Notepad then copy it from Notepad to a codeblock not specifying any language?

Personally, I like posts with images, it look professional, it gives the op a much better understanding.

However, I think the images should always be uploaded to the forum site with the "Insert image button" ... otherwise, they will eventually becomes unavailable.

    Renee,

I think that being sarcastic about the situation is OK, but you are being too aggressive for nothing ( I am sure you are more beautiful when you smile )    ;)

I am not without agreeing with the fact that the team that made this forum was obviously lacking experience.

However, there is a group of people that may be much more to blame than the forum team.

All the MVP's were invited to test, find bugs and make recommendation before the forum was put online.

To me, they are the peoples that are the most to blame about the situation ... They didn't made their job. When you choose to be MVP, you got to take the responsibilities that goes with it.

  • I dont know and I have serious doubts about the team, they do have eyes you know?

Before my accident, I was an MVP and it wouldn't have been an MVPs job. There are no technical errors that I've seen, simply readability or ergonomic issues. Microsoft forgets something basic. It is selling to two different populations. The first is users who likes the "artsy craftsy". The second are developers who don't care so much about appearance. As far as the forums are concerned, information content and usability are important and they are monstrously important. Developers DO NOT require the new and fancy. What developers like/want/need is some thing rapidly readable and something that is reliable. That's best not forgotten.

Why being so sad this morning?

I'm not allowed to answer that because [(Reed Kimble)] says "Please do not pull a thread off-topic in such a way; it clutters the thread and is against the terms of use for the forums." and I don't want my license to post removed.

The line you've quoted is out of context.  In that situation you were attempting to argue a side point because you disagreed with another contributor.  In this situation you were asked a direct question which could have been briefly answered without pulling the thread off topic.

Answering another contributor's question is unlikely to result in any post deletion or account suspension unless the post is blatantly violating the terms of use.  However arguing with moderators and refusing to take their advice could lead to adverse consequences.  You have been asked to lesson the sarcastic responses and to refrain from making disparaging remarks towards others, and I'm still hoping that you will choose to comply with those requests.

Please keep in mind that your acceptance of the MCC award means that you agreed to uphold a level of professionalism and courtesy which is above your current forums behavior.  Beyond that, all forum members are expected to refrain from name-calling and other childish acts.

Even Acamar doesn't have one and look how much Acamar does on the forums. Acamar should be an automatic MVP, no sign up should be required.

I'm not going to re-apply if I get asked again (which I doubt considering the feedback I keep getting :) ). Mostly because I have no experience or expertise and therefore I shouldn't represent Microsoft as a Community Contributor anyhow.

I mean, after all, if you and Renee Culver and IronRazerz and especially Naomi N don't have one it is probably insignificant in meaning anyhow just like anything else added next to a users profile by Microsoft. I hope that isn't considered a disparaging remark towards the MCC award though.

Although with at least 20 years using (I won't say experience) Microsoft products and having to debug all of them as an end user for Microsoft I'm not sure I want to represent Microsoft anymore anyhow.

I couldn't be a forums moderator because at one point in time I took an oath "I, Mr.Monkeyboy, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same;" which that part I still take seriously.

Also I was brought up not to use false premise with or to  support my argument. Something usually seen in an extreme egos need for superiority.

As well I couldn't bring myself to lock threads or delete posts that didn't necessarily agree with my point of view since I would be violating various rights of the poster as well as not necessarily being correct anyhow. But that's just me.

Fortunately for me I have never worked really. Except maybe that time in a hurricane and 60ft + seas on the ship I was stationed on I personally assisted in saving 8 people off two boats in two separate locations south of Key West, FL somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico. But really that was fun more than anything else because I assisted in saving lives. And then maybe that time......or that other time.......or those hundreds of other times......I can't remember now.

So I'm not impressed with titles or points or awards too much nowadays anyhow. No disrespect intended.

  • Leshay

The reason is that posting CSS code Plain text, make the text to become executable by the browser. Basicaly, the browser will attempt to execute the text. Which is not good.

The problem is that the server should recognize that the text matches some CSS instruction and either Quote the text or split it in different Span so it dont get executed.

At this time some CSS instruction are OK, but some are simply removed by the server.

I have filed a bug and so far Microsoft could reproduce it .. I am sure that it will eventualy be fixed since a programmer forum that cannot post CSS code is sort of stupid

If you want to see it happen try this code

Put a webBrowser and a button on a form

The load event puts in the browser some text that can be executable, but since it is quoted, the text show the code

Then press the button, the quotes are removed, and you will see the CSS text being run by the browser

    Public Class Form1

        Dim MyText_A As String = "&lt;a style=""font-size:x-large;""&gt;CrazyPennie&lt;/a&gt;"

        Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
            Dim DocumentInnerText As String = "<head></head><body> <div style=""display: block;"">" & MyText_A & "</div> </body>"
            WebBrowser1.DocumentText = DocumentInnerText
        End Sub

        Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
            WebBrowser1.DocumentText = WebBrowser1.DocumentText.Replace(MyText_A, UnQuote(MyText_A))

What I hate of using Skydrive is that I then need to leave the code on the Skydrive forever.

If I remove the code from my Skydrive, then I am breaking the link in the post and a futur user will just get to a link thast goes no where.

There is also the problem that Microsoft is still making changes and even if I post a code today, it might not work good tomorrow

  • I am brigning here a new idea.

I have search, experiment and managed to create "Apps" that can run out of windows8 (or on Windows8, but in desktop mode.)

Them Apps are HTML5 and Javascript driven. The test applications that I did are running on Windows7 and using Chrome as engine, not IE

The Idea behind this is that I can create an App that would be an application made specially for viewing the forum.

Since the UX of the app is totally independant from the actual UX in the  HTML code sent by the Microsoft server, it is then possible re-design totally the look and functionalities of the forum. We can make it what we want ... add some menus, queries etc...

    here two ideas:

       1) It would be quite easy to create a crawler to go and retreive all the infos of all threads of a particular user. Therefore, the app can create a local database of all your threads since you started on the forum. You can then create any query you want, .. organize and access all your threads very quickly.

To keep the database up to date, I can have it done automaticaly since the "My Threads" page supports a RSS chanel.

     2)  since the "My Alerts" page also supports a RSS chanel, I can have the App to notify you when someone post on one of your thread. (It is more convenient than thru email )

    --------------------------

Found no way to make this work from VS.

I used "Sublime" as editor for  JSON, HTML and  Java Script , and the "Developper Tools" from Chrome as debugger.

It works well, All I need now is to create the User interface

    ------------------------

Here is a screen shut of a "Hello World" with the code (The JSON manifest code don't show) ( ... and I know, I wrote "Hello Word")

The App just look like a white square so far, ...

    Crazy,

You're one of the brightest people I've ever known and on this forum, as far as I'm concerned, you're at the top of list with knowledge. I've said this many times and will continue to (even if you do hang around with alligators - and I grew up in Charley Town, I know all about those critters! Don't trust them any further than you can throw your car!)

    ...anyway...

    Luc,

What if you're wasting your time in all of this? We don't own this joint, Microsoft does. What's to say you do all this wonderful stuff and ... they change it yet once again.

It's happened so many times now that I would really be more surprised if they didn't change it.

Friend - please consider the bigger picture of it all. Your goodness and graciousness is obvious, but please don't do something which will only work ephemerally.

For what it's worth, and I mean it sincerely - you're the best here. Don't waste it.

  • Hi

For me, my number 1 preference is reconfigurability. I just plainly do not understand the recent attack of blandness creeping into applications all over the place. I recently uninstalled an anti virus app which I had used for several years because they issued an update which used a lot of light orange text on a white background with no option to change it. Forcing a UI on users is not to my liking at all (hence all my interest in this thread and the css stuff).

Would you say if your proposal would allow users to reply/post to the forum?

  • Crazy,

You're one of the brightest people I've ever known and on this forum, as far as I'm concerned, you're at the top of list with knowledge. I've said this many times and will continue to (even if you do hang around with alligators - and I grew up in Charley Town, I know all about those critters! Don't trust them any further than you can throw your car!)

    ...anyway...

    Well, Frank,

I like to learn stuff, and this is somewhat special, I am getting this to work using an experimental API from Google. The API is not actually available thru "Chrome Developer", however, it can be found in the Canary version of Chrome.

Ya, Chrome has a Canary ...   It is basically a Super version where they experiment their new thing

anyway, I find this interesting to learn this even before it gets available to the developer.

Also it is a good thing that I practice a bit Java script. I am incredibly rusty with that. that is probably 10 years since the last time I did something with that.

Also, I am not expecting this to be so big of a work.

      The way I see that,

       1) create a HTML template with a CSS file in the header

       2) from Java, make a request to get the forum page source code

       3) extract the needed info, .. some general info. For the post content, I can just copy the entire <li> tag, The only modification to do inside the <li> tag I think is to move the Avatar element to the top

       4) replace the info extracted into the template

       5) load in the App

As far as creating a crawler for the user threads, I already have the code done.

I had made this: I did a crawler that crawled the entire TechNet Wiki, the crawler was using the Bing API on Azure Market to compare the articles / paragraph in the articles / pictures posted on the wiki with 200,000 other blogs from the Web.

I did that to find all the articles that were in fact plagiarism. (Got the list of users name that are doing this!!)

And, believe it or not, I found plagiarism in 13.7% of the articles

I agree, this is stupid to have to type 4 or more characters of why i edited my post. I always give the same reason of "edit". That should explain it to whoever is checking why i edited my post. I always leave a comment in my posts if i edit something that should be noted anyways so i don`t see any good reason for it.  :)

Now I remember why I am not a Web developer:

1100 lines, ...  And I am, at the most, a third of the way done. ( And I dont have any Java script done yet)

Just to show a web page!

Well of course, If I was doing this every days, I would be faster but ...  why, why, nobody never came with a better way to create web page than by using HTML?

    ...

Anyway, web applications are crazy .. Why do I need to use all those languages to create a single application ( HTML, CSS, AJAX, SQL, JAVA, JSON, etc ... )

    ...

  • OK, here I need your thought, so, dont stay quiet !!!

    -

First, dont look at the background design, color, font ... I'll get to that later

I am at putting down the functialities and the position of the items on the ui

    1) as I say, I will use "Menu" to access the functialities, but my first idea of using side slider panel is too restrictive. Lot of element need more width, ... list boxes, textboxes, ...

So, I thought at enlarging the space between the forum header and the list of thread and put a menu there. Something that look like tabs.

Those tabs will either slide down or open in a popup window, depending on the room needed.

    2) when scrolling, only the thread list will scroll, the header and the menu will stay fix.

    3) When clicking on a thread, it will open in the "Expending" view, not in another window, (The behaviour of when you click the little triangle in the existing forum). And I will somewhere provide a button to open the thread in a browser.

    4) Do we need a vertical scroll bar ??

    5) should I to move the #post and #View somewhere else? ...  where?

    6) Have you give a thought about the forum for regular ... who can access, ... How should this work

    7) Other thought.  .. Dont say I dont know about this, ... Whatever You can do in VB, I can do here.  .. And as soon I get done with this HTML, I will start on doing the Java programming. It will then get intersting. (The HTML is like doing the designer code in a VB application, the Java script is like doing the application itself.

    - An interresting fact in an app, when clicking a link in an App, you dont navigate to the link, you got to make a event handler and navigate or do whatever from there.

    -----------------

Take a look an tell me what you think I should do from there

  • @ Crazzypennie,

For (1) i would trust whatever you decide is the best for the room you have to work with. For (2) That would not bother me. For (3) That also would be ok in my book. For (4) i am not sure what you mean. If you mean a separate scrollbar for the expanded view of a question i would say that as long as there is a scrollbar to scroll up and down the page already then i don`t think we would need another for the expanded question as it would take away from the viewing width. For (5) this is just my opinion but, i removed the (Forum Visual Basic) in my Style code which moved the (Replies | Views) rite under the question title and then the (Created by) on the next line and then (Last Reply) as the last line just to make it so each question was shorter and i could fit more questions in the page view at once. I don`t see why we would need the (Forum Visual Basic) in the text of each question unless it comes in handy for others for some reason. For (6) I guess i am just a regular as i have no title in my name so i am not sure what the difference would be there or maybe i am not understanding what you are asking. For (7) Can we still see the avatars, give points, reply, and propose as answer as we normally can using a browser like in the picture below. Will this be usable without installing and updating all kinds of odd and end stuff. I only ask because i am using an older Lenovo IBM Thinkpad T42 with XP Pro SP3 and i don`t have a lot of hard drive space to play with so i try to only install and update just what i need.

This is a Discussion so the (Propose as Answer) is not shown.

  • Luc,

1 and 2 no problem for me.

3 i would love to get a button, as i am viewing thread by thread in a new window.

    4 i don`t think so.

5 how about adding a column right of the question where to put these ? This would save vertical space, so more questions would fit.

6 i have no idea. For the access part, maybe one should have been in the forums for a defined amount of time with providing a defined amount of answers.

I would love to help you with this ( but only the non UI part as i hate doing UI ;-) ) but i am very busy till October. I sure will keep an eye on this thread.

Btw., starting a new thread about this would shorten the loading time. With my tablet ( in the train ) it takes very long to load the page and clicking on "last reply" doesn`t take me to the last reply but somewhere else ( either more to the top or more to the bottom ).

    Hannes

If you have got questions about this, just ask.

files they choose to open would always exist
