BI Connectors by Matt Masson

I read an article by Matt about SAP connectors, but still need to connect a few dots, especially since it was an older article.
I have SAP ERP ECC6, the article mentioned connectors for SAP BI also BIZTALK. So what I want to do is use SSIS 2008 on SQL Server 2008 r2 on Windows 2008 Server to create some basic data pulls from the SAP ERP 6 system. I guess one of my questions is, are the SAP connectors ONLY for SAP BI/DW, are there any for just the ERP system?
I have searched for ODBC drivers, OLEDB drivers or anything else that can connect to SAP 6. But have not yet been able to find a complete solution. It seems that BIZTALK might be the best route, but I have also encountered BAPI'S and SAP extractors.
So what is the best most complete solution to make the connection and pull the data using SSIS?
Note: I don't know much about BIZTALK or what it is. So details on that would help, as opposed to saying, Oh, just use BIZTALK.
Thanks!
