How to Use

I find it very frustrating that my original xbox has never needed a repair and still works fine, I have over 50 games and all the original equipment that came with it. Unlike my 360 (20 games and had to get 2 new controllers) that has had to repaired and has to be repaired again. Worse I have to pay for it. I have tried to stay loyal to the xbox brand but if I have to pony up $100 to get the 360 fixed, and it will eventually need to be fixed again, I might as well try out the PS3. You have lost a loyal customer. I have also received the ring of death on my sons 360 elite, when his goes down I will get him a PS3 also. I thank you for your time, Chris Vigue cdvigue@yahoo.com

For web sites such as mine, it would help to have a way to simplify the task of keeping links to the MSDN current. I know that sometimes the MSDN itself gets broken links, but if the MSDN maintenance people could provide something to help keep the links current, then I would use it. In other words, instead of linking directly to a page in the MSDN, if I could link indirectly in a way that makes it easier to update links that get broken when the MSDN changes, then that would help.

Windows 7 RC: Is it possible to switch audio output of applications on a per display basis?

I really am falling in love with 7, something that never happened with Vista and only grudgingly with XP abiet only because I was so attatched to DOS. All that aside, Since XP I've wanted to set my audio outputs to match my display outputs. I could see situations where some users would find that behaviour unfavorable, it seems most people want to set the out put on a per application basis, but I wouldn't want to switch even those settings when I change seats. I think matching audio outputs to video makes more sense then audio will always play from the same output you would expect when an application is on that display, almost natural, definately stress free. Hotkeys to send the focused App to different displays would be heavenly too.

Now, I don't know if there is something like this already here on MSDN, but I've been pulling my hair out for the past several hours over issues that I would like to pose before the Microsoft Team directly responsible for developing the .Net Framework, and I think it might be handy for them as well to be able to see a community forum that says:
Hey, .Net team, why don't you add this?
Or
Could you do it this way for these reasons?

Personally, I find the Invention of the Friend/Internal accessor to be defined only for a single purpose: Selfish bad programming.

There are quite a few Great components out there, that could be made just a little bit better, except the .Net dev team made most of the functionality "Friend", so the only recourse is to either re-invent the wheel (in complete defiance of what OOP is all about) or decompile the .net libraries and change the accesssors to protected, which is illegal/unethical.

But currently, i have not foudn a forum here that directly allows one to communicate with the Develpers of the Windows.FOrms.Namespace, or the Data.Linq namespace, etc, etc, etc. Sure there are forums that you can ask questions and post comments, but there is no way to really communicate back in a public setting with the .Net crew who developed these libraries so that when they are developing .net 4.0 they can get a direct feed back from the developers who use this stuff and get some insight into: Oh, why not make this more accessible to the developers so they can actually program what they want, not what we give them.

I think it would be beneficial to all, as well, as opening up other people's comments to truly create a better product, because as it is now, I find .net as equally frustrating as it is helpful. It is one thing to be able to create an application fast, but it would be quite another to be able to create it right at the same time, and currently the two are mutually exclusive.

the iZune is the worst music player device mp3 player whatever you'd like to call it ever made. I recently had my Xbox 360 die on me and went to Best Buys to use the 2 yr warranty AGAIN for the 4th time. As usual Best Buys has held up to their end of the bargain and replaced my Xbox 360. Only this time they upgraded me to an Xbox 360 Elite. This is the first time I did not keep my old hard drive because the elite HD is much larger. When I got home and reconnected everything and tried to recover my gamertag I needed the original E-mail and password to do this. That was about 4 yrs ago and 2 ISP's ago. I am not sure if I remember the Email from back then and I certainly do not remember the password I signed up with. I tried contacting Xbox by phone (4 Times) and each time they get me to go online and fill out a form with all the personal information I can think of to prove I am who I say I am. The reponse I get tells me that the information is not complete and that the old E-mail Windows live account doesn't exist. I do not want to cancel my Xbox Live account because I have made purchases with this account and do not want to re-purchase them. I don't even know if I can cancel it without the email and password...???

What do I need to do to get my Gamertag back? I gave my name, gamertag, SSN, Address, Credit card number I am paying for it with including expiration date, The answers to 3 secret questions, the amount of microsoft points I still have on my balance, friend's names on my Xbox Live account and offered to answer any other questions they want to ask me.

Time Zone Update for Outlook(Exchange) and server 2003

I would like to get the patch to update the time zone for all the servers of my company.

We are using server 2003 standard and the daylight saving is schedule this Sunday at 2 a.m.

I have to update all the servers as well as the exchange server with Outlook calenders.

Our current time zone is GMT +10:00, Australia Eastern Standard time. We are based in Melbourne.

The controls for my SpaceNavigator are no longer working correctly with Virtual Earth. For example. pressing down used to lower my altitude, now it just spins me around. I dunno what it is, but perhaps i feel the urge to develop as many things in such a wide range for others to use. Sure there are occasional times where a Friend or Private class/structure is necessary, even useful, but the sheer volume of such classes that exist in the .Net framework is pathetic.

In a class that sometimes needs to pass multiple data structures asynchronously within itself (like Net.Mail.SendAsync()) , it is appropriate that since all of this is in the private scope of the class, to create a quick private class/structure within that lets you pass three different values to the UserState object of the Asynchronous method. This makes sense.

But there I am trying to find a non-external method of creating a zip file. I could use the Shell32 method, creating the quick byte header of a zip file and then linking a Shell32.Folder object to it, and moving the files into that folder uses the Shell32 for XP to "zip" it. Or, to use a .Net method I could use the IO.Packages.ZipPackage found in the WindowsBase.dll.

However, the Shell32 method requires the Interop.Shell32.dll file to be included with my application, which i find annoyingly redundant with regards to COM and it's design, which with any other language framework that utilizes it doesn't require an "interim" dll to interface with the default dll. I can understand using that interim dll for type checking during development, but once the app is compiled it should just link directly to shell32.dll in the system directory.

Additionally the IO.Packages.ZipPackage works great, is completely internal so no additional assemblies need to be included with my application, but on the other side of annoying it adds this [Contenttypes].xml file to every zip it creates which could be confusing to those who end up having to extract the useful files from the Zip file.

There are of course countless Zip Libraries out there, DotNetZip is one that I've found that is very good, and donation ware to boot. But that is again an additional Assembly that would need to be included with my application, either in the install or combined via ILMerge.

So i thought, well, i only want a simple zip created, a few files on the fly, with no excessive accoutrement, and so I go into .Net Reflector to see if I can figure out how the ZipPackage works, to see if this is something I could code myself quickly and easily...and what do i find:

Why in the world is this an Internal "Friend" class?!?!?!?!?!?!? This should just be part of the .Net environment. They've obviously coded it for the ZipPackage class to create a zip file, and just think of all those extraneous libraries out there that have been made for creating Zip files, and yet all the while, Microsoft has one made and ready to go, but for some annoying reason they've hid it in such a manner that it will never be used by anyone but them. *sigh* Perhaps there are some licensing rights that PKWare imposed, but if one can use Shell32, or one of the countless other Freeware or commercial based zip libraries to create a Zip file based on the PKWare specification, than that shouldn't prevent Microsoft from providing the same thing.

Oh well, Perhaps if I point this out to the good people at Microsoft it could be a great day to have an update of the 3.0 framework that exposes these internal namespaces and classes so that others may use them as well...doubt it.

Historically MSDN has been a site that is scoped primarily to publish code, documentation, and other developer content for customers. As we shift to our community platform and implement features such as social bookmarking, developer will be able to bookmark not only MS generated content but also anything on the internet. We hope this will be used to bring access to non-MS generated content on MSDN.

Do you think that is valuable?

Recent MSDN Survey Question raises warning bells

I recently received a MSDN survey questionnaire that sent alarm bells running through my head.

I have a problem with the following question:

“What is the minimum price difference between a subscription with DVD shipments and one without DVD shipments that would cause you to switch to a subscription without DVDs?”

There is no option to suggest: Microsoft should not charge extra for DVD based subscription. They should make the non-DVD based subscriptions cheaper.

The option should be: I would move to non-DVD subscription if the cost is lower by “XXX” dollars.

All the provided options were "I would stop DVDs if they cost US$xxx more/year". Why is Microsoft trying to increase costs… they have always provided CDs and DVDs. If they want to lower their cost and move subscribers to the download version, then they should make the non-DVD subscriptions cheaper than the current DVD version cost.

Infact this questainnare is targeted to find out how much more Microsoft can charge me if I do not shift to the non-DVD version.

Has anyone else received this questionnaire. I have put forth my thoughts above.. I would like to understand what other MSDN subscribers are thinking.

I'd really really like some way of communicating a wish list to Microsoft, maybe with some sort of voting system. We're all out here on the front line trying to use .Net and the various technologies and I think we're pretty well placed to find areas of improvement. It would be of benefit to us, and to Microsoft in helping improve their products and give them competitive edge.

I'd like to see all the development and end-user technologies covered, including .Net, the languages, Office, Sharepoint, Biztalk, CRM etc etc.

There are some things I'd really like to see addressed, but I have no way of communicating it and knowing that at least someone has read it and passed it to the right group. Does such a mechanism exist already?

I am talking not about the VS it self, but these continuous version that appears every 6 months are so nervous for a lot of programmers, for example we start working on VS2008 at the beginning of this year and now we have to move again to VS 2010 next yar, it is so bad , we as .Net programmers regarding ASP. VB, or C# l our markiting value are decreasing and every thing is becoming so easier where we will not be able to work if u as MICROSOFT continue with this form.

When we interact with J2EE developers we found for them a point of view that says that JAVA is not having versioning as .Net has, but they have versioning depends on problems that are faced by the users and the programmers.

Please, its not a markiting issue only its becoming more and more a respect issue for the products, really me and alot of other .Net programmers are really disappointed with this , VS 2008 is still baby and needs minimum 3 years to be replaced not now, but you can do a Service packs for it so you add new functionalities

Whatever is decided for the future of MSDN Online it is imperative that you keep all the existing content. I am currently trying to find some files that are referenced in MSDN articles but the download links result in "not found". This is hugely frustrating for me as a user. As an example I'm trying to find this download in this article How to Create an HTML Editor Application. I have even tried using my MSDN Subscription CD's but they also point to the files online. So anyway, please retain all existing content!

A little chat side panel while reading the MSDN documentation. Wouldn't it be very good if there was a little chat room for each page of MSDN documentation. While reading the page, a side panel opens with all other users also reading the page. Chat instantly with others and get help and share information with live chat.

It's a little far fetched, but if implemented, I think it would be better than the postings and more fun also. Perhaps if someone says something very popular that we think should be made into a posting on the comments, we can click the thumbs up icon (to be implemented of course).

After so many people give it the thumbs up, then it gets put to the comments. Anyone else like this kind of idea?

So what are "Social Bookmarks," what do they do, and how are we supposed to use them?

Suggestion Regarding Putting up the Road Map

Hi

Its nice to know that MSDN Site is opening up for the community , its quite a right time to do it , I think after codeplex its a nice move.
Now what I want to suggesdt here is as their going to be a varied audience base (even in developer community) we should get a road map which
aligned with your current vision , as people going to come here and put up the suggession we all can see how this road map is followed up.
