Task List Extensibility

Question

I am trying to add tasks to the task list programaticaly by querying my database depending on some conditions.
Is there a way to add new custom columns similar to priority(support of drop down list) to the Task List .
And is there a way I can change the naming convention on the already exsisting columns.
