  • I can't give you a specific book name because the only book I have ever read about VFP was "Hacker's Guide to VFP3.0" by Tamar Granor and Ted Roche. As I remember it didn't teach the wizards and moreover neither Tamar nor other experts suggest using wizards.

IMHO VFP's own solution.app and F1 help is quite informative. I don't think you would ever find a book that explains what you ask as a whole (but understanding pieces in book you could construct it yourself).

This is the best beginner's book I have ever found - especially for people coming from a 2.x backgound :

Fundamentals: Building Visual Studio Applications on a Visual FoxPro 6.0 Foundation

Even though it is a few versions old, the concepts still apply.

  • Every book published by Hentzenwerke has an electronic version available. You still need to purchase it, but by definition, it is an EBOOK.

  • sir

most of the books only teach wizard.  for eg.  i wanted to write a program for the below.  but i did not find any book which will guide me to do that.

    i have a table invoice.dbf, prdmas.dbf, freeissue.dbf,points.dbf

i want to have a grid.

one column of grid accepts rate and depending on rate product should be selected in next column of grid.  rate, prodcode and prodname stored in prdmas.dbf.  then i should be able to type in qty in third column.  then i should be able to select type of sale in 4th column.  the type of sale are regualr, exchange, regualr with free.   if i select exchange i should popup a window which displays exchange product and amount given for that.   if i select regular with free, the pop should be free product code and free product name and allow for selection. then 5th column should display combo box which has got discount % for that product.  sixth column should be (qty*rate)-(discount+exchangeamt).

and the grid should accept n number of items.  finally done when i cick on save button the record should be append to invoice.dbf.  the form should also generate invoice number.  the form should also ask invoice date and pointcode. the form should also give 25 points for entering into sale and subsequently give one point for every Rs. of the total amount.  and all these things should be saved to invocie.dbf, points.dbf.   the form should finally have payment options cash, credit card, pointamt.

freeissue stores prodcode and prodname and freeprodcode, freeprodname

discount.dbf stores prodcode, prodname, discount %

points.dbf stores pointcode, pointname and points.  (each point = 1 rs.)

every book (for eg. special edition using visual foxpro 6.0) just teaches how to ceate a grid for a particular table and mostly uses wizard.

can u please tell me some books which teaches very good application programming.

the above program i can easily do very well in foxpro 2.6 on dos and windows.  there we use screen builder.  but the limitation is no scrolling facility so u cant take n items. it is best to used grid.  i want to upgrade to vfp 9.0 but did not find any book which teaches programming by example like this.  but only says how to use them with the help of wizard.

can u kindly suggest some good books which teach extensive programming.

    thanks in advance

  • Apparently you haven't looked at too many VFP books. The fact is, very few of them show how to use the wizards.
