Install new SQL server, on existing SQL Server

    Question

  • Hello.

We currently have a SQL Server 2012 Express, which are running some production databases.

At the moment, we need to install a SQL Server 2012 (Not express) at the same server. At the end, the full SQL server will replace the SQL Express.

My question is, if we install a full SQL installation on the same server - using the normal MSSQL instance, will the SQL Express instance then be temporarily offline at any time, doing the installation???

Answers

  • Nope. You can install new version as a named instance and then existing SQLExpress edition will remain as is

You can install multiple SQL Server versions and editions on same box each will run without affecting other SQL Server process. So no when you install other SQL Server version express edition would not go offline unless you put it offline
