.Net 32 bit and 64 bit encryption

    Question

  • I ran into a couple questions as we are involved in architecting a .Net 2.0 solution that will need to support 32 and 64 bit systems and .Net frameworks.

    1. Does .Net encryption behave the same on different OS’s, or on different platforms (i.e. 32bit and 64bit)?

    2. More Importantly, if something is encrypted on a 32 bit XP platform, can we assume that it can be decrypted on a 64 bit Windows 2003 platform, and so on?

This is using the built in encryption in the .Net framework itself.

Answers

  • Yes, the algorithms should be completely interoperable between 32- and 64-bit.  Not only that, since most of the algorithms are public standards, the data they produce should be interoperable with non-Windows systems as well.
