Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD

    Question

  •

It looks like Blu-Ray is going to be the winner in the format war.  Is Microsoft now going to support Blu-Ray?  Maybe with Vista SP1?

  • Windows Vista doesn't natively support either high-definition format, although it does provide basic shell services for both formats (eg, detecting when a disc is inserted and running the correct program). Microsoft relies on 3rd parties to build playback software, as was the case when DVD first came out.

Windows Vista SP1 is already complete so no features are being added to it. http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/archive/2008/02/11/windows-vista-sp1-availability-for-technical-customers.aspx

  • Microsoft has no plans to create a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360.

  • So with SP1 out for Vista and no native Blu-ray Support will Media Center be able to play Blu-ray disks with a 3rd party player installed? Or is this something to be addressed in the future?

  • Apparently they simply got tired of talking about this subject.  Really good question, wish Microsoft had cared enough to at least answer it here.
