TFS - SMTP Error

    Question

  • My TFS 2010 with SP1 is logging the following error in the event log when sending notification email

Exception Message: Syntax error, command unrecognized. The server response was: 5.3.3 Unrecognized command (type SmtpException).

I know my smtp server is properly configrued as I can send email using telnet from my tfs server. Any help will be very much appreciated.

  • Yes, I looked at it and turned on the trace but the trace is not more helpful then the event log...Trace shows the same error

  • The SMTP command is unrecognized. So I think you should to check the STMP server log and view if your TFS send the wrong command.

I want to know if you have the SMTP server? Or you used the third party SMTP mail server. Below is the SMTP commands may help you: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996114(EXCHG.65).aspx

And one suggestion, please check your computer name and the domain if it contains the special character, that may occur the SMTP server cannot verify the client identification by command HELO.
