error while installing sql server 2012 developer edition

    Question

  • hey,

When installing the program this is the error it gives:

"There was a failure to calculate the default value of setting INSTANCEID.
    Error code 0x85640001"

I realise this question has been asked before but so far i haven't found a single one with a solution that worked for me (if they had a solution at all).

From the logfile this error comes up (as expected):

    Inner exception type: System.BadImageFormatException
            Message:
An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format.

The strange thing is that this exact same install file did work on the laptops of 2 friends so it how did it get corrupted?

In any case this is what i've tried already:

    - Redownloaded the ISO 3 times (for a total of 4 downloads...)
    - tried mounting the ISO with daemon tools
    - tried extracting the ISO with daemon tools
    - tried extracting the ISO with winrar
    - got the ISO from a friend (it worked on his laptop)
    - got the extracted ISO from another friend (for whom it also worked)

Between each installation i uninstalled the setup and rebooted the laptop. Firewall and windows defender were put offline and the .exe was always run in administrator mode.

As a final note: we used an usb drive to transfer the file between laptops and it worked for others, just not for me ><

So, perhaps, the file was not corrupt and the issue is something else?

    Thanks in advance,
    killernerd.

  • The error look like is ISO file is which you use for installation is corrupted but you are saying that this is not the corruption case then do below:

    1) Disable if there any antivirus is installed are exclude the sql file for scan.

    2) Before install it again be sure all registry entry is also cleaned.

    3) Make sure you enable .NET Framework 3.5 using article:http://blogs.technet.com/b/aviraj/archive/2012/08/04/windows-8-enable-net-framework-3-5-includes-net-2-0-and-3-0-i-e-netfx3-feature-in-online-amp-offline-mode.aspx

    4) Try to download the media again and copy it to a local disk from. http://www.sqlcoffee.com/SQLServer2012_0007.htm

    5) If no success post report of summary.text

  • well, as mentioned in my OP:

    1. antivirus and windows firewall were disabled

    2. how do i do that? (or rather, which keys do i have to remove/edit?)

    3. is enabled

    4. again? I've downloaded it a total of 4 times and have used the install files from others who had no issues installing

    5. the error points to "corrupt media" but at this point that should be pretty much impossible (having tried 7 different files in almost as many different ways) but if you really want, here's the log:

  • that doesn't really help. I do need to get this software running on my laptop asap...

It's a 3 year old dell vostro 3700 running windows 7 professional (or ultimate, i forgot) 64 bit, has 8 gigs of ddr3 RAM and a somewhat outdated core i5 cpu.
    Should still be plenty though.

  • Hello,

Maybe is a WMI issue. Could you please run the following command on the Command Prompt:

    winmgmt /verifyrepository

You should get the message: “"WMI Repository is consistent".

    Hope this helps.

  • comes up as consistent :\

edit: transferred the file to my computer and it installs just fine there (mounting the iso using daemon tools), so it's not the media that's corrupted.

  • Hello,

Please disable any security suite or antivirus software, and try again.

This time do not mount the ISO, unzip it to a local disk folder using WinRAR only, and then run setup from there.

    Hope this helps.

  • I suppose i shouldn't expect any more help here so i'm just going to give up and go with the 2008 version.
