Easy question I'm sure - "the value for xxx cannot be determined ... or there is no current row for a column named"

    Question

  • Ok so I'm a PowerPivot newbie and I've googled this and it seems like the answers out there however I'm just failing to grasp it.

I have two tables, let's say they both are identical with regards to the columns they have and contain sales data by Month and by Product. So:

    Year | Product | Amount($)

    2011, XYZ, 100

I also have two look up tables that give me a unique list for Year and Product, and have linked both my tables to these, so all good there.

So now I want to create a Pivot table that looks like this

Year across the top ( easy enough)

    Product, tbl1.Sales, tbl2.Sales,Total Sales

Actually writing this out may help me think through but let me ask anyway - how would I do this?

Do I create a Total Sales by Product column in both tables, and then create a new measure that sums these two up?

If so what would be the formula to sum them up?

Right now, being the newbie that I am, I have simply tried writing:

    tb1[Sales] + tbl2[Sales]

and have been getting the error:  "the value for sales cannot be determined or there is no current row for a column named sales"

  • Ok I have worked it out.

    It was simply   Sum(tbl1[Sales]) + Sum(tbl2[Sales])
