Is there a free report builder and viewer to use with Vistual Studio 2012 Express and SQL CE?

    Question

  • Hi,

Is there any free report engine to build and view reports to use with Visual Studio 2012 Express which uses SQL Compact Edtion 4.0?

If so, what is it and how does one set it up?

    Thank you and kind regards.

  • You can use the ReportViewer control included with Visual Studio. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms251671(v=vs.110).aspx

And create a DataSet from the SQL Server Compact database and connect to the report.

  • Hi ErikEJ,

Thank you so much for your quick response. I see the link you sent me is for Visual Studio 2012. Does it also come with the Express version?

    Thank you and greetings.

  • Hi ErikEJ,

You have been very helpful. Thank you.

Just one more thing, does this all apply to Visual Studio 2012 Express as well? I need something for Express version of Visual Studio.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi ErikEJ,

I have checked in VS 2012 Express and it does not seem that the wizard for building reports is there, as I thought. When you click on new project, the only templates available are: Windows Forms Application, WPF Application, Console Application and Class Library.

Or am I looking at the wrong place to create a report? If so, could you kindly help?

    Thank you and kind regards.

  • It is not a project type, it is a project item, pls read the instructions on the msdn site, for example this http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms252067(v=vs.110).aspx

  • Hi ErikEJ,

I appreciate your quick reply and kind assistance. However, please note that I'm talking about the EXPRESS version of Visual Studio 2012. The link you sent me is for the non-express version of Visual Studio. I'm aware that ReportBuilder/Viewer comes shipped with the pro version but this is not the case with the free Express version. That is why I've opened this thread.

You will notice that there is not Report Builder or Viewer item available in the standard item templates that come with the Express version of Visual Studio 2012.

So my question remains whether there is a free report designer and viewer that can be installed with the VS 2012 Express. Or, is there a way that one can get the MS ReportBuilder/Viewer installed on VS 2012 Express?

Thank you for your kind understanding.

  • Just installed vs 2012 Express, and the answer to your original question is No, not that I know of. You can buy Pro and get it with that.

  • Hello,

Just as ErikEJ post above, there is no ReportViewer control for Visual Studio Express 2012. But you can try to install  the 2012 Report Viewer Runtime which contain controls for viewing reports.
You can download Report Builder to create report with .rdl file extension, change the .rdl to .rdlc, and then you can access the file using the Report Viewer control.
