Truncation of logfiles still not working with march 2011 release

    Question

  • Hi All

The truncation of logfiles is still not working with march 2011 release on my system. Is there anything that needs to be done after installing the march 2011 version?

  • You are speaking about the SQL Log-Files?

AFAIK this has nothing to do with TFS.

Either do a backup on the SQL AND the Log files on a regular basis, or just set the Backup mode to simple for each SQL database.

  • TFS-Powertools manages the whole backup-process for me. It should (according to the documentation) truncate the logfiles, so that I dont have to take care of this.

  • Hi TheFrogman,

    Thanks for your post.

Could you please provide the detailed configuration about your TFS system? And please provide more detailed information about this issue.

As far as I know, Backup plan remove NO_TRUNCATE option in TFS Power Tools 2011, so the SQL log will doesn’t grow indefinitely. Please refer to this blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/bharry/archive/2011/03/03/mar-11-team-foundation-server-power-tools-are-available.aspx.

You also can create Q about this issue in TFS Power Tools 2011 download site: http://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/c255a1e4-04ba-4f68-8f4e-cd473d6b971f.

For transaction logs don’t be truncated issue, you can refer to this post: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-ZA/tfspowertools/thread/fb69721a-b530-4ce3-ab98-b7da92032386.

  • If the SQL databases arenot in soimple backup mode, it may be possible that the TFS backup doesn't clear the logs.

So you are sure that full backups of the transaction logs and the DB are created?

I fond the TFS backup wizard to buggy and to have more control over this, I created maintenance tasks on my SQL server corresponding to the TFS docu.

  • Hi John

I have the latest PowerTools on the TFS-Server (August 2011). The backup works, but the logfiles are just not truncated.

I re-created the backup-plan several times which did not help either.

The DB is in full-recovery mode.
