Visual Studio Express 2010 - Commercial Use ?

    Question

  • Hi,

    This document :  http://www.microsoft.com/express/support/support-faq.aspx

states (referring to the 2008 product range) :

Can I use Express Editions for commercial use?

Yes, there are no licensing restrictions for applications built using Visual Studio Express Editions.

However, the Visual Studio Express 2010 (C++) start up screen says "for evaluation use only"

So my question is : Are the Visual Studio 2010 Express licensing terms the same as 2008 Express or have the licensing terms changed ?

    Best regards,

  • You need to register your version of VCEE, that is why it is saying for evaluation use only. But the terms are still the same, there is nothing stopping you from marketing and selling the output for VC.

If you are still unsure then you should actually contact a Microsoft representative. I can't remember it right now, but there is a phone number you can call for licensing queries.

  • That's the problem, I can't find a web source where it talks about explicity the restrictions or permisions to use Express Editions, does anyone have found a formal document? ALL forums says it's legal to sell applications developed in Visual Studio Express Editions, but links are not longer available.

I appreciate if someone post a formal Microsoft link where I can find explicity this information.

    Thank you guys.

Usually, you explicitly forbid something. For example, you can not distribute Debug version of software, and this is explicitly stated  here - "Determining Which DLLs to Redistribute" http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/8kche8ah%28v=vs.100%29.aspx. I.e. if it is not explicitly stated otherwise, you can build software using VS Express Edition, market and sell it.

By the way, all versions (retail and free) use same compiler/linker tool, there are no "special marks" left in binaries, and it would be very difficult to prove that certain software was build in Express Edition, but not in retail version.
