837 HI segment order (BE/BG qualifiers)

    Question

  • One of our business partners sent us an 837 institutional file containing HL segments with the BE and BG qualifers in an unexpected order (namely, the BG before the BE.)  The error created by BizTalk 2006 R2 is ' Segment Out of Sequence'.  The error was traced back to the HI (Health Care Information Codes) segment , 2300- Claim Information Loop.  The sender is reporting the Condition Information (Qualifier BG) before the Value Information (Qualifier BE).   The sender's HIPAA Knowledge Department advised us that since the HI segments all have a position of 231, the HI segments can be reported in any order.  Can you please provide a response to this issue?  Is it appropriate to have the BE and BG in any order?

    Here is an excerpt from the 837I:

    REF^EA^021777~
    HI^BK>42731^BJ>42731~
    HI^BF>42731^BF>V5861~
    HI^BG>09~                                    <==BG
    HI^BE>01>>>625~                         <==BE
    SBR^P^18^088343010^^^^^^BL~

    As a side note, we ran the same file through Biztalk 2002 HIPAA adapter and received no errors; the file was transformed.

  • Steve, we identified this regression in R2 and are in the process of issuing a QFE for the same. I'll update this thread once the QFE is published.

    Thanks,

    Arnab.
