    Question

  • Hi,

while having the code samples demoing the Sync Framework (which is awesome FW!) I don't think that is sufficient and that is probably one of the reasons not enough  folks heard about it.

Can you consider doing couple a 101 short and focused "File-New project" type screencasts demoing the concrete common scenarios:

    1. Basics of synchronizing SQL Server and SQL Express\Compact over the WCF service

    2. Basics of P2P sync over WCF service

    3. Advanced: Conflict resolution, data filtering, validation, logging, tracing etc.

I am pretty sure that would not take a lot of your time while it would have tremendous value for the community trying to get a grip on Sync FW

    Thanks,

    Nikola

  • Hi Nikola,

Those are all great suggestions.  I do want to make sure that the samples you were referring to were the Sync101 samples that you can find from http://code.msdn.com/sync as they cover a lot of the topics you point out in your list.  However, the point of screencasts is a good idea.  We do have a screencast on the first one in your list here to help you get started:

Introduction to Sync Services for ADO.NET and the Visual Studio Designer

In this session we will introduce Sync Services for ADO.NET which is a part of the Microsoft Sync Framework.  Specifically, we will discuss how Sync Services for ADO.NET enables synchronization of information between database systems and how Sync Services for ADO.NET helps developers avoid many of the common issues associated with taking data offline.

  • I've seen that video (and all the others including the PDC2008 etc) but IMHO there are couple of issues I have with that:
    - it is more focused on VS IDE wizard aspect driving the experience then on explaining "what's in the box" which is sometimes also a thing of interest for enterprise development scenarios
    - it is showing the simplest possible case "SqlCompact download only" and not taking enough care about other ways sync can be done.
    - It is VS2008 IDE data set focused scenario while we in VS2010 have ability to replace data set with edmx (which I guess could be the recommended way to do things in 2010)

Anyhow, the Sync Framework help chm file is so awesome that I found all of my answers there (even it took me couple of days to get that I need to read it like a nook - from cover to cover) and I am personally all set with Sync FW :)

Looking forward to see Sync FW v3 (on Mix?) and keep up the great work!
