Export "folder-pairs" from synctoy

    Question

  • Hi,

i've running synctoy 2.0, and have created about 8 "folder-pairs" for syncronisation. No folder from system-partition, only data-partitions. In case i install windows new, all "folder-pair"-information from synctoy are away. Is there any solution to save the "folder-pair"-informations, wich i have created? I'm not happy always after a new installation to create this once again....

    regards,
    harry

  • Hi -

We store folder pair configuration in a file called "SyncToyDirPairs.bin". It is most likely to be found under %appdata%\Microsoft\SyncToy\2.0. In the same location - you will also find a bunch of SyncToy_*.dat files - you will need to back all these files up and make sure that they are restored after your machine has been reconfigured. And of course assuming, you changed nothing under your data folders.

    Thanks

  • I've searched on Google and Microsoft's support site, and I have not been able to find any references to documentation regarding SyncToy v2.0 & functionality for importing & exporting folder pairs.

I routinely use SyncToy v2.0 to push files out to various locations on network shares, but, periodically, some re-factoring is done that requires the target path to change.  When this happens, it is a total pain in the ____ to have to manually re-create the folder pairs in SyncToy via the UI.  It would be significantly easier to export the folder pairs to some sort of text file format, preferably XML, which could be edited and then re-imported later on on the same workstation or on a different one, as needed.  The binary format in which folder pairs are currently stored is totally unsuited to this type of batch-mode maintenance as there is no command line interface or programming interface that's documented to perform these functions.

Please advise as to where the documentation is regarding your previously posted statement regarding this functionality in SyncToy v2.0.

  • Hi -

You are correct about the fact that this is in a binary format which makes it unsuited to any kind of change outside of SyncToy. There is no documentation available because this is not a supported way to do this. We do not support backup and restore of SyncToy folder pairs ( in fact we provider no support for SyncToy - it is an "as-is" application from Microsoft so you will not find any documentation on a support site). The post above is a suggestion on how to do it and we make no gaurantees about the fact that this will work in the future.
