Visual Studio 2010 C# Express can't get proper Key for Registration

    Question

  • I've tried already remove and install it again - without success, 2 types of errors displayed - Wrong registration key (which I've received from Microsoft) or re-install the product.

What can I do to register the Express Edition? Or all free products from Microsoft don't work?

  • Hello,

As I know, all express editions do not require registration and they are all free.

Here is an article offers useful tips on installtions of VS you can refer to: http://forums.msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/vssetup/thread/60f71a54-506e-4c70-be98-e993ce6d1ddf/

If this issue still exists, What is your OS? If it is Vista or later, follow the two setps shown below and try reinstalling to see if the issue is fixed.

    1. Verify that if you have turned on the feature of .NET Framework.
(Control Panel - Programs and Features - Turn Windows features on or off - Verify that the box next to Microsoft .NET Framework has been checked)

    2. Use Verification Tool to verify .Net Framework has been installed well on your OS. If .Net Framework cannot be verified on your computer, you can try to follow the steps mentioned in this blog to repair the .NET Framework.

If the installation still fails, I think we need to collect the logs for further troubleshooting. After collecting logs, you may send vslogs.cab file to me (v-jinfan@microsoft.com)

The steps to collect the log:
    - Try to clean your "%temp%" folder (Start Menu >> Run >> Type "%temp%")
    - Install VS.
    - Collect the logs from "%temp%" folder
       Collect tool: http://blogs.msdn.com/heaths/archive/2008/05/09/visual-studio-and-net-log-collection-utility.aspx

  • At first I also thought that it is Free - but it is displaying message that I have only 6 days from Evaluation period - after that I should get Free registration - I've tried again get new Registration code and this code again was not accepted - I am suggested reinstall the Visual Studio Express.

However I've already one time removed Visual Studio Express and installed it again - without success, even number of the days is not started from 30 days again - previous number was stored.

Also I've tried validate the Framework by the tool you suggested - all the versions of .NET Framework since 1 till 4 are validated successfully.

What else can I do for the installation Visual Studio C# Express?

    I am using Windows XP.

  • Hello,

Based on your descriptions, this issue seems related to the licence and the installation completes well.

You can refer to this article about how to register: http://www.microsoft.com/express/support/regins/

If this issue still exists, you can call 1-800-426-9400, Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. (Pacific Time) to speak directly to a Microsoft licensing specialist, and you can get more detail information from there. Worldwide customers can use the Guide to Worldwide Microsoft Licensing Sites to find contact information in their locations.

I called the appropriate phones in Moscow without success - Technical Support is not answering because they are supporting only commercial products and Informational Support is not answering because they can't clarify where should I create appropriate topic at http://social.technet.microsoft.com - because even the relevant Forum doesn't exist (I obviouosly can't create the Topic in any forum as I suppose which is not relevant to Visual Studio Express).

In addition the specialist from Moscow Informational Support simply "dropped" my call as the final answer to my request for the support :)

From my current experience Visual Studio Express 2010 is not working at all - and this "offer" should be dropped completely because in the absence of the appropriate support we can't use this product since the version 2010 (as I remember previous versions were working fine without problems).

  • Please don't mark your messages as "Answers" yourself - I still don't have the resolution to my problem.

I've tried already all the phones available in Russia - also I've tried email of Microsoft Russia support - without any constructive answer.

General statement of all people from the Microsoft support is "Free Editions are not supported".

And nowadays I have Visual Studio C# 2010 Express with expired license which is not running anymore - and all the keys which Microsoft is sending to my email by request for the free registration - are not working.

What else can I do to use the "Free" edition of Visual Studio from Microsoft? It seems like the marketing campaign which is not allowing registration of Express Editions anymore in order to promote Visual Studio Professional sales without free alternative.

  • Hello Vasily,

Sorry I have it installed on my machine and it works well. I am not able to reproduce your issue on my machine.

I think a quicker solution is to reinstall your OS and then install the express edition first.

    Thanks.

  • OK. I understand that it is difficult process to support free editions thus I am going purchase Professional version and hope it will not contain this bug.

It doesn't make sense for me to re-install OS because the product key is not accepted by Visual Studio - I don't see the link between OS settings and the behavior of Visual Studio - because as I understand when I click the button "Register" only the simplest operation is executed (like call to Microsoft site for notifying about registration). And I see nothing here to be linked with OS settings - this simple call can be executed with any settings of my OS I suppose.

Regarding the OS also I've configured Express Edition successfully and registered it at Windows Vista - probably it will be better upgrade my OS also for another PC.

  • Hello,

The reason why I suggest reinstalling VS is that the issue may related to registry corruption.

As you mentioned above the OS, what is your OS? Visual C# Express 2010 is only supported on below systems:

    1. Microsoft® Windows® XP (x86) Service Pack 3
      • All editions except Starter Edition
    2. Microsoft® Windows® Vista (x86 & x64) with Service Pack 2
      • All editions except Starter Edition
    3. Microsoft® Windows® Server 2003 (x86 & x64) Service Pack 2
      • All editions (install MSXML6 if it is not already present)
    4. Microsoft® Windows® Server 2003 R2 (x86 & x64)
      • All editions
    5. Microsof® Windows® Server 2008 (x86 & x64) with Service Pack 2
      • All editions
    6. Microsoft® Windows® Server 2008 R2 (x64)
      • All editions
    7. Microsoft® Windows® 7
      • All editions

    Does this help?

    Thanks.
