Installing SQL Server 2008R2 (Developer Edition) on Windows 8 Enterprise

    Question

  • I'm trying to install SQL Server 2008 R2 (Developer Edition) - 64bit on Windows 8 Enterprise and an error message comes up stating the SQL Server is not compatible with this version of Windows. Has anyone had any success in getting it installed and working? I was able to get it installed and running just fine on the Windows 8 Release Preview.

    Thanks a bunch

  • Hello,

SP1 for SQL Server 2008 R2 is required on Windows 8.

    Hope this helps.

  • Even after setting up the .net 3.5.1 and .net 4.5 using the Optional Features on control panel, the installation prompts with a compatibility issue. SO i guess downloading SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 and then installing it and then patching up with the new SP2 would work great! :-)

  • Hi sfsierra,

Im sure that you musy be aware of the difference between SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2. Both are different versions and their databases also do so.

SQL Server 2008 - Has a current SP3 as an update.

    but...

SQL Server 2008 R2 - Has SP1(Previous) and gets SP2 as the latest update with some cumulative updates(optional).

So the current version in 2008 series is "SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2" and there's nowhere comes SP3.

    Thanks.
