SQL log has some of the following just before the "..SQL Server service failed to start.." message

moving unmanaged resources Do_sqlScriptSqlScriptHlprStart service MSSQL$SQLExpress

  • I don't see SQL server (SQL Express) in Services so I can't start it manually. Additionally, I've update SQL2005 to SP4 and I still can't see any SQL service except for SQL Server VSS Writer which starts automatically. The others [SQL Server (SQLExpress); SQL Server Browser both are on my other laptop and they start but they aren't on the XYZ02 laptop). Note: FYI I have two (2) pretty much identical Dell Inspiron 1440 laptops: XYZ01 [8GB; 1TB 64bit chip/Win 7 Ultimate (64bit); XYZ02 (4GB; 500GB 64bit chip/Win 7 Ultimate (64bit)] .

I read the link [see below] and I can't find Sqlservr.exe nor the sqlos.dll.  I looked in Program Files (x86) and Program Files on the working XYZ01 laptop.

    *******************************************************************
I had the same problem on a fresh installation. The "Alternate Workaround Steps" provided under WORKAROUND in Microsoft Technet ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/954835/en-us ) solved my issue. The No of processor method didn't work for me. Here is what I did.

    1. Installed the release version of SQL Server 2005 Standard edition 32 bit on Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit.
    2. Error came. SQL DB service won't start. I left the error message open.
    3. I went to another server where SQL server 2005 standard edition SP3 was running. Copied the sqlservr.exe and sqlos.dll from the BINN folder to the local server's BINN folder and replaced the 2 files.
    4. Hit RETRY on the error message and it worked. After completion I installed SP3 immediately. It's running fine now.

    Hope it helps.
    *******************************************************************
Since the XYZ01 laptop works fine I don't think the issue is processor-based issue.
    Thanks!!!
