VS2010 Cannot create the window

    Question

  • I installed VS 2010 Ultimate, It worked fine. But last week, it did not work again. It will throw exception: Cannot create the windows when open VS.

It still does not work even if I uninstalled it and installed it again.

    How to resolve this issue.

    Thanks!

    Scott

  • Hi Scott,

As you said that it worked well before, whether you install any add-ins or third party tools in your VS IDE/ Windows? If have, please move/disable them.

    1. Please install the VS2010 sp1.
    2. Run your VS as the admin. Or run your VS in safe mode, check it again.
    3. Please reset your VS settings, and remove all add-ins,

Devenv.exe /ResetAddin: Removes commands and command UI associated with the specified Add-in.

Devenv.exe /ResetSkipPkgs: Clears all SkipLoading tags added to VSPackages.

      4. Please make sure that it is not the .net framework installing issue. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/10/13/8999004.aspx

  • Hi Jack,

    1. Install the VS2010 sp1.  ---  Does not work.

    2.  1)The OS is Win2003SP2, so run the VS as admin. 2) Run VS in safe mode. I did not try. How to run VS in safe mode? Does it mean that run VS in safe mode Operation System?

    3. Run the command: Devenv.exe /ResetAddin  or Devenv.exe /ResetSkipPkgs  in VS command prompt(2010) --- Does not work, It will throw exception: Cannot create the windows.

Now I am doing Windows Microsoft Update. There are lots of updates.

    Thanks

    Scott

  • Hi Scott,

You could run the following command line.

Devenv.exe /SafeMode: Launches the IDE in safe mode loading minimal windows.

Maybe you could get more troubleshooting steps in the following thread.

  • Hi Jack,

    1. Devenv.exe /SafeMode   --- Does not work

    2. Reboot the machine into Safe Mode,  --- Does not work.

    3. In Safe Mode, create a new user account, and then log off, log on this new account in Safe Mode.  --- Does not work. Run VS, the first dialog about VS settings will pop up. The second dialog about "Cannot create the windows" will pop up.

4 Use Devenv.exe /log <log path>". to catch some logs, Does record 17 cause this issue?

  • Hi Scott,

I’m afraid that it is hard to find the real solution. Since it worked well before, you would check whether you install some tools in your machine, and then remove it.

Please try to reinstall the Framework 4.0.

    Reference:

    http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/475554/cannot-start-visual-studio-2010#details

If still no help, maybe you could use this tool to uninstall VS2010, and then reinstall it again, hope it could help.

  • Hi Jack,

    1. Remove .Net Framework 4.0, and then install it.  --- does not work.

    2. Use the uninstall VS2010 tool to remove VS2010, and then install it again. --- work fine now.

    Thanks

    Scott
