Can't uninstall VS11 Developer preview
-
Freitag, 2. März 2012 16:45
Environment is Win7 Ultimate, 32 bit
I have installed VS11 Developer Preview and now wish to remove it in order to install the beta. The uninstall fails. I have tried to reinstall and I again have a fully functioning preview. An uninstall fails with the same message. I have logged this as a bug but I am hoping that someone else has a ready answer.
I believe the pertinent log file entries are:

Mark,
Welcome to forum. First of all, it's suggested that you install pre-release products on virtual machine, or a seperate hard disk that you won't hesitate to reformat.
I'm writing to let you know I'm settings up VS 11 on Win7 to verify the scenario. On another test machine, VS 11 developer preview on Win 8 Developer preview uninstalls without any problem.
I'll let you know if I make progress.

Hi Mark,
I have verified the uninstallation of VS11 Developer Preview on Windows 7 and it works as expected. Windows 7 was clean one. In other words, it might be an environment issue on your Windows 7 system.
Based on these information, I think the most efficient way to this issue would be to restore OS to earlier point, or format the disk. Hope this helps.

Mittwoch, 7. März 2012 11:30I know I can reformat or restore earlier but the point of sending logs and even posting the basic question is to figure out why this installation will not support the removal of the product. Of course it is an environmental issue but what is it in the environment that is cauing the problem. So yes, I'm frustrated and would like at least a tool that existed in previous VS previews that cleaned out registry entries, etc.

Mark,
No problem. Would you please run Collect.exe tool to collect Visual Studio installation log: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/varungupta/archive/2009/10/26/instructions-to-collect-net-framework-4-and-visual-studio-2010-beta-setup-logs.aspx
You will get a cab file contains complete log. Send me an email to forrestg@microsoft so that I can send you a workspace for file uploading. Your data will be safe there.

Hi Mark,
I have reviewed the log and find following useful information in dd_vs_langpack_20120228173530.log:
Error 0x80070003: Failed to read state from file: C:\ProgramData\Package Cache\{cdc77709-2d6c-41e5-97bf-76ba46d281be}\state.rsm
This indicates the previous uninstallation fail and the installation state is corrupted. Would you please try:
- Create folder manually: C:\ProgramData\Package Cache\{cdc77709-2d6c-41e5-97bf-76ba46d281be}. Someone on forum has mentioned this workaround.

Forrest,
I am all set to try the uninstall again but apparently the last uninstall removed the entry in ControlPanel->Programs for Visual studio 11 even though I can still run the product. I am on travel for another week and don't have access to the original installer for the developer preview. Is their a link available for that original installer? If not, I can simply wait until I am back in my office.

Got it - Thanks, did the reinstall (took seconds) and tried the uninstall after creating the directories. It looks like the same type of error:

You cannot actually be serious, Are you Joking ? This is NOT an acceptable solution and you know it. I too am having this issue, it is not something corrupt with my SYSTEM, it is something wrong with the Preview Uninstaller and Microsoft needs to come up with a fix for this issue. How absured, rollback or reformat the disk, if I was this persons boss he would be escorted to the door and fired on the spot. You can bet your bottom dollar I will NEVER even attempt to install ANY Preview, RC or Beta whatsoever from Microsoft again in the history of time. This is not the first time they have puilled this lame excuse for their developer irresponsibility, I am in awe of how this company can actually post such a retarded solutiion to a problem they created, and the employee still be an employee. -

Hi,
As stated above, I did test this uninstall scenario, and the issue you mentioned doesn't reproduce. Now that you run into same issue, that does add weight to side of issue VS non-issue. The support team including me are ready to help.
The uninstallation issue could be complicated: product itself, Windows update, other software, and user activity, all of these could result in the issue. If you need help, you can collect logs with the Collect.exe tool and share the log via Skydrive.
Collect.exe tool can be found at: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/varungupta/archive/2009/10/26/instructions-to-collect-net-framework-4-and-visual-studio-2010-beta-setup-logs.aspx
Please create a new thread for your case.

Reformat my disk? Are you insane? What kind of a crazy answer is that??
The "Uninstall" option does not appear in Programs and Features. I cannot be the only person who has this problem.
You say you tried it and it works. OK, it worked once in a controlled environment in a Microsoft lab. That's nice to know. What about the rest of us?

Do you mean VS 2012 RC or still the old VS 11 beta? And which OS do you work on? I asked as I need more information to look into the issue. Log is also necessary to diagnose it.
thanks and regards,

Lots of people have been having this problem, and many have resorted to reformatting their drives and promising never to install such Microsoft software again.
However, I see this, which seems to make the "VS11 already installed" errors go away: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/da-DK/vssetup/thread/c220a150-6c3e-489b-a1ef-e3065f945eca
