[ Configuration Database ] TF255147: The following server that is running SQL Server is not listening on the expected TCP port

Hi!

We are moving a 2010 TFS server to a new instance with a separate database.

I have configured the service accounts as the installation chm file instructed

When I run the Application Tier Only installation I get three warnings.

Warning [ System Checks ] None : VFIREWALL (System Checks\Root\Firewall)
Warning [ Configuration Database ] TF255153: Service is not set to start automatically: SQL Server Database Services
Warning [ Configuration Database ] TF255147: The following server that is running SQL Server is not listening on the expected TCP port: xxx.xxx.xxx.xx, 1434.

I have searched the forums and found that the TCP/IP protocol should be enabled for the database, and it is.

The weird thing here is that the TFS installation wizard is able to find the database, connect and run some tests but at the same time it states that the SQL server is not listening on that port. I ran telnet to see if there was a firewall blocking but I could connect just fine.

What kind of installation are you doing, is it an “Application tier only” against an existing moved database?

Hi.

Yes I'm doing a Application tier only installation. That's because the installation we are moving was also a TFS 2010 one. Pre SP1, so I had to uninstall SP1 and re-install the other patches.

I went trough the installation .chm file and then some. Of all guides that may be the only I have missed :).  I will read this too. 
I'l get back to you with the outcome.

As Magnus said, please refer to the detailed move steps in that document.

You can install and configure the new TFS 2010 with the new instance on another Hardware, ensure the new TFS 2010 work fine on the new Hardware. Then move TFS 2010 from old server to new server.

I have now read the guide but my primary problem persist. That the verification step in the setup wizard or the TfsConfig tool can't connect to the SQL instance. The databases are restored and the wizard seems to find it in the initial steps but when it verifies the setup it can't connect. The SQL instance is not on the default port, could it be a cause of error? I have checked with my admins and there is no FW in the way between the App-tier and the SQL server.

This error is from the TfsConfig tool when I ran the command TFSConfig PrepSQL /SQLInstance: ServerName.

“CreateTfsExecRole.sql Block #1 Error: TF246017: Team Foundation Server could not
connect to the database. Verify that the server that is hosting the database is
operational, and that network problems are not blocking communication with the
server.”

This is a new App tier right after installing the TFS Admin Console. Should I try and do a vanilla initial installation and then try the import?

Could this error be caused by some feature previously installed in the old installation that hasn't been installed/configured in the new environment?

Hi!

I solved the problem, as it is sometimes it was quite easy to solve, although not obvious. Our SQL server instance was a named instance that ran on a non-default port. It seems that the installer can't cope with port numbers, because when I changed the connection string to SERVERNAME\TFS_PROD instead of SERVERNAME, 1434 it worked! But it doesn't tell you that until the Readiness Checks! Another connection string that the installer doesn't seem to support is SERVERNAME\INSTANCE, port.
