I have a multi server sp2010 farm where all the databases run on 2008 R2 (approx 10 TB of data).

Since our databata volume is so high, we don't want to upgrade the RDBMS right now.

Can we install PowerPivot 2012 Service Application on our app server and still keep the database server on 2008 R2? or should the RDBMS be upgraded to 2012 for the use of powerpivot?

Your DBs can stay on 2008R2, you will just install another instance with powerpivot integration. So powerpivot will run on 2012 SQL analysis services, but RDBMS will run still on 2008R2.
