FragePerson or Group Column for Content Type Shows out of date users

I have a document library that uses a content type including a column to store the user's line manager - the user selects their line manager manually from a drop down list.

This is done by setting the Column type to People or Group, and then allowing only the selection of users, and Choose from a group.

However, when creating new documents and saving them, the users in the drop down list includes every single user on our site, and some who have been removed.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

I've seen this when certain people have been removed from the domain, but they were previously added manually to that site, or a site above it (like at the root site collection level) to have permissions to a site.  When I removed them from this permission list, they stopped appearing in the search box.

    Hope this helps!

Unfortunately this user has been removed from the both the Users for the Site Collection, and the Sharepoint central user table - but still shows up in the document properties when accessed from Word.  I've even tried creating a new content type using a completely different template, but the People Picker is still using out of date users.

Where is this being pulled from?

Looking in a bit more depth, I created a completely new content type, in a new document library in a new site collection (so a completely separate set of users).  No matter which Sharepoint group is defined for a Person or Group column for the content type, the Web Properties dialog shows all site users.  If I remove a user from the site, they are still listed in Web Properties person chooser.

Is there a fix for this?
