I'm using SharePoint Server 2010 internally for testing purposes/development purposes.  I don't have Exchange Server or any other SMTP mail server setup.

I have a hosted SMTP mail server.

Can I connect SharePoint Server 2010 to an externally hosted SMTP mail server for e-mail notification testing?

In this case, my hosted SMTP server requires authentication... so I'm not sure SharePoint Server 2010 will be able to connect.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

    Hi Joe,

We are in a similar situation where we use Microsoft Online for our mail. We have just setup an SMTP relay on the sharepoint machine, as we couldnt find a way to provide credentials. It was a 15 minute solution and works just fine and I'd recommend you have a look at doing the same

    Hi,

For outgoing setting, you should know SharePoint WFE server will login the email server as anonymous user.

So If set the external SMTP mail server, you must make sure which is enable for anonymous user, also allow relay for anonymous clients(WFE servers)

    Hope this helps

    Thanks!

    Everything will be fine.

    Hi.

I know this subject has been answered but, in my case, my Exchange Server is in my ISP, so I can't use anonymous connections, but I installed a local Virtual SMTP server, but Sharepoint isn't communicating with it though I've configured the SMTP serve on the Sharepoint Central Administration.

    Can somebody Help me please??

    Thanks
