    Re: MSDN Disc 4402 - January 2008

Still can't get Visual Studio 2008 DVD to [even start to] Install on XP SPK2

Disabling automatic Windows Update did not solve the issue.

Disabling  Windows Live OneCare Antivirus did not solve the issue.

The DVD drive does not even load the DVD; it just blinks a few times then hangs for hours (the drive works with other DVDs just fine).

I end up having to shut down, at which time I get the “End Program – CTDVDDET.EXE” dialog, then after a long while, the “End Program – DLACTRLW.EXE” dialog, after which the PC finally starts to shut down, then just hangs at the blue screen, so I end up having to unplug the machine in order to reboot.

    Any suggestions?

    Hy everybody

I have the same problem with a HP nc6320 notebook with MSXPSP2 trying to install MSDN Disc 4402 (VS TS 2008 Dev ed.) and Disc 4406 (VS TS 2008 Team Found. Server Worgroup).

After reading the first post and another thread in a different forum about the same problem with a HP notebook, I tried to disable DLA and CD recording from my DVD drive like following:

    1. open Explorer
    2. right click on DVD Drive, and select "Properties" from drop-down menu
    3. open "Recording" tab, uncheck "Enable CD recording on this drive", and press "Apply" button
    4. open "DLA" tab, uncheck "Enable DLA on your drives", and press "Apply" button.

After this, I inserted the MSDN DVD into the driver, and (miracle!!!) I got first setup screen.

Probably the problem is related to DLA, a program from SONIC which comes embedded into HP notebooks, used for formatting and managing rewritable CDs; so probably point 3 (which involves Microsoft explorer embedded CD file recording) is not necessary.

Now I will start setup procedure (I don't know why, but I'm a little troubled for this ...)

    Bye

    Hi Hal

I suggest to copy the content of the installation DVD to HD first, then install from the HD to isolate the potential media problem. (run "setup.exe" manually)

If you have further problem, please post back.

    Thanks

    Thanks for this solution.

I was having the same problem on an HP nx7400 XP Pro SP2 laptop.

After using your tips the installation now runs.

    Thanks again.

I wasted half of a working day with this problem.

Copying is of no use, because of the AutoRun feature: you only need to insert the Visual Studio 2008 DVD and anything accessing the DVD drive hangs. No way to shutdown except for powering off.

I uninstalled Sonic DLA and after that no hang any more.

My guess is that Visual Studio 2008 install tries to write on the DVD and that way causes the Sonic DLA to interfere.

I was having this same problem, I thought my DVD drive was failing. As suggested I turned off DLA and know the disk seems to work fine. Can't believe how much time I wasted trying to sort it out prior to finding this post. All other DVDs work fine with DLA on, why does the Visual Studio DVD fail with DLA on?

Thanks again for the info, glad it was an easy fix.

Thanks for the suggestions about disabling DLA.  That was what fixed it.  In my case the recording tab step was not necessary.

Affected Product:  HP NX6325 Business Laptop

    Thanks a million!!!!!!!!
